Sustainability

Year 12 Environmental Science Excursion

On Thursday, 7th August, the Year 12 Environmental Science students visited Bald Hills Wind Farm and the State Coal Mine as part of their VCE assessment. The aim of the excursion was to explore and compare the processes involved in fossil fuel extraction and renewable energy generation.

Despite the cold wind and rain, students remained enthusiastic and engaged throughout the day. At Bald Hills Wind Farm, they learned about the benefits of wind energy and how sustainable energy sources like wind power can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. The visit sparked many thoughtful questions and discussions around energy production, sustainability, and the future of Australia's energy landscape.

In contrast, the visit to the State Coal Mine offered a glimpse into the past. Descending into the underground tunnels, students experienced what it was like to work in total darkness—an everyday reality for coal miners over 50 years ago. The eerie sounds of the pumps and the damp, confined environment gave students a real sense of the hardships and dangers miners once faced.

We would like to extend a big thank you to the staff at Bald Hills Wind Farm and the State Coal Mine (Parks Victoria) for their hospitality and informative tours. A special thanks also to Christopher BARRY for his lively and informative commentary as we travelled through the scenic South Gippsland region, and for getting us safely back to school.

It was a valuable and eye-opening day that deepened students' understanding of energy production and the importance of transitioning toward more sustainable practices.

Career Launchpad: Regenerative Economy @ Monash University

On Friday 25th of July, in another exciting initiative, Green Team members joined Enrichment students for the Career Launchpad: Regenerative Economy event at Monash University—imagine speed-dating, but for sustainable careers!

Students met with professionals from organisations like SEC and Cleanaway, participated in rapid-fire interviews, and brainstormed clever questions to ask industry experts. Highlights included an inspiring keynote by Dr. Susie Ho, a Monash climate leader who represented at the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference.

The day ended with students taking home valuable insights, free eco-goodies, and plenty of inspiration for future green careers.

Big thanks to Connor Fleming for his support and Timothy Li for organising this eye-opening experience.

The Green Team has been doing an outstanding job over the past few weeks!

They’ve been hard at work cleaning, restoring, and planting a variety of Australian native plants and vegetables. The team also repaired the water tank, which now allows us to use sustainable water sources for our garden. New soil and mulch have been added—not only to support healthy growth, but also to keep the area safe and welcoming for everyone.

In addition to their hands-on work, the Green Team has begun educating students about important environmental initiatives. They’ve been raising awareness about the Container Deposit Scheme, proper recycling practices, and water conservation.

Eye-catching posters created by the team have been placed around the school, reminding everyone to act sustainably and dispose of waste responsibly.

Fantastic work, Green Team! Your efforts are making a real difference. 🌱👏

The brand-new Green Team Information Posters now displayed around the school—in offices, hallways, locker bays, and classrooms!

These vibrant posters are part of our ongoing effort to promote environmental responsibility by encouraging everyone to properly sort and dispose of their waste—especially recyclables.

Please take a moment to remember to throw away rubbish in the correct bins, at home, at work or even when going out. If each of us does our part, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable school environment.

Secondly, our school has a Container Deposit Scheme, if you have bottles and cans and want to make a contribution to the school, please take your recycle bottles and cans to your nearest CDS centre. Brentwood Secondary College’s Donation Partner ID is C2000010797. Our Green Team will be collecting cans and bottles at the school on Wednesday lunch time, students can make their deposit there.

Let’s work together to make a difference—one piece of rubbish at a time!
