Principal's Report

School Review

In Victoria, all government schools undergo a mandatory School Review every four years to assess their performance and inform the development of a four-year School Strategic Plan. This review process is a key part of the Department of Education's Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO) 2.0  and is designed to improve student learning and wellbeing.

Brentwood is currently undergoing our School Review. A panel, including the principal, senior education improvement leader (SEIL), school council president, and challenge partners are reviewing the school's performance.  They have conducted classroom observations and reviewed lesson plans to gain a deeper understanding of the school's practices. Further to this they have also met with various student, staff and parent groups across the last two weeks with a view to help us determine our next steps in continually improving our school.

Next week Brentwood's production of Spamalot opens for all to enjoy. The annual production is always a calendar highlight for our wider school community.

Minister’s visit

Last week we had the Deputy Prime Minister (Richard Marles), our local Federal Member (Carina Garland), local state member (John Mullahy) and local councillor (Elisha Lee) visit our school to meet with our student leaders. They visited a science class and engaged in a Q and A with our student leaders in the Library in which they shared a little about their pathways into politics, the challenges of leadership and a few tricky questions based on current policies and social issues.

The opportunity to have four levels of government together addressing our students is a unique and valuable learning opportunity. Our guests were impressed with the thoughtful and challenging questions posed by students.

PIVOT Survey

Over the next week or so, students will again be given the opportunity to ‘have a voice’ and provide their teachers with feedback on their learning experience in the classroom by completing a short survey. This process was also undertaken earlier in the year. The feedback from the students to the teachers has been used, along with other information, for teachers to make adjustments to their practice so that we are better meeting the needs of our students in the classroom. From a school perspective these surveys help our teachers become even better, but it also demonstrates to our students that learning is a life-long endeavour with our teachers always looking to get a better understanding of their students so that they can then learn how to better improve their knowledge and skills.
