Supporting Each Other Through Life’s Ups and Downs

Next Thursday, 11th September, the SJW school community will come together to recognise R U OK? Day - Australia’s National Day of Action that reminds us to check in with the people around us and ask a simple but powerful question: “Are you OK?”

At SJW, all students and staff will be involved in meaningful conversations to help us learn how to support one another. We’ll be teaching students how to recognise when someone might be struggling and how to offer help in a caring and respectful way.

Why It’s Important

Everyone goes through tough times and these challenges can affect how we feel and behave. Sometimes, people won’t say they’re struggling - so it’s important to notice when something seems off and ask, “Are you OK?”

Research shows that:

People who engage with the R U OK? campaign are up to six times more likely to reach out to someone who may be having a hard time.

They’re also more likely to:

Ask someone face-to-face if they’re OK

Listen with empathy

Encourage them to seek support if needed

90% of people who are regularly asked “Are you OK?” feel more supported, connected and cared for.

What We’re Doing at School

On the day, students will be guided through the four steps of an R U OK? conversation:

We’ll explore what each step means and how to use them in everyday life. These skills will help to build a culture of kindness, empathy and connection - both at school and at home.

Keep the Conversation Going

We encourage families to continue these conversations at home. Please ask your child what they learned on R U OK? Day and talk about how you can support each other through life’s ups and downs.

Together, we can make a real difference—because a simple question can change a life!
