On the 7th of August 7G, 7E and 7B participated in an event called: Tales of Port Phillip Bay. The event was organised by Miss Lam and run by Ella from the Dolphin Research Institute. This event helped us better understand the work we were doing in science around food chains and webs.
The first thing we did was listen to Ella talk about all the work she does with dolphins in the bay. She talked about how they keep track of all the dolphins all throughout their lives from when they are newborns to when they have their own newborns. She talked about how they identify different dolphins with their physical features, fins, noses, tails etc.
She then played different dolphin and whale calls that we had to identify. She first played their sounds. Then she played them again but didn't tell us which ones were which and we had to write our guesses on our whiteboards.
She then taught us the exact way they identify dolphins. There were multiple pictures of different dolphins around the room which showed different physical traits of multiple different dolphins that were numbered. In partners we went around the room and matched our numbers to the correct dolphins using their fins and spots.
We all had an amazing time learning new things about dolphins and Port Philip Bay.
