Model United Nations

Friday 15th August marked our attendance to the 6th Model United Nations conference over the past 4 years and I wanted to take a moment to share with you some of what our students achieved and the successes of the program.

Every year, more and more students across the school are eager to participate in the program. This is regardless of grade or subject. Much of the success regarding high levels of engagement comes from word of mouth from previous participants sharing their experiences. We have students who have completed multiple conferences as well as new students eager to get involved every year, some even begging!

The MUN provides students with an opportunity to develop a range of skills including teamwork, leadership, negotiation, diplomacy, critical and creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Students step out of their comfort zones and enter into the shoes of their assigned countries delegates. Every conference our students put in weeks, sometimes months, of preparation leading up to the event. They give up their lunch times and attend after school sessions eager to learn and collaborate with peers.

From our own students, the feedback has been excellent. They have been able to build connections with students across the state including regional, inner city and with students from schools both similar and vastly different from ours. I’ve watched our students build confidence and resilience and I couldn’t be prouder.

At the event at Dromana Secondary College in August, students and staff from other schools were so impressed by our organisation, they were asking if we were from a private school. The students and I made and brought morning tea along and our students shared their food with those around them, staff watching this commended our generosity and kindness. At every event, whether that be at Monash Uni, a school event or when we hosted, our students stand out amongst the 200 attendees as being the only ones that approach the secretary general to speak to them and gather their insights every time. Our students go out of their way to speak to others, make them feel comfortable and make friends with everyone. Staff and students from attending schools asked us whether we would be hosting again soon on multiple occasions, noting the huge success of our last event.

Year 11 Legal Studies Mock Trial

The Year 11 Legal Studies class took part in a cross-class Mock Trial for their latest SAC. Students took on roles of the plaintiff, defendant, lawyers, witnesses and the jury. It was a fantastic effort from all students involved. They were able to apply key skills and knowledge to a real world scenario while also getting an opportunity to get creative, particularly with their evidence!

Well done to the Year 11 Legal Studies students on your engagement and completion of the very first Mock Trial SAC.
