Learning in Action

Literacy:

In our Literature lessons, we’ve read up to Chapter 9 of War Horse, and the students are fully engaged with the story. To deepen their understanding, we explored nonfiction texts about the role of horses in war, which helped connect key themes in the novel. Students have also started planning their own narratives, focusing on using adverbials, tier 2 vocabulary, and onomatopoeia to enrich their writing. Additionally, they’ve been practising expanding sentences from War Horse by adding the who, what, where, when, and why to create more detailed and descriptive writing.

This year in handwriting, students are practising their touch typing skills using a program called 'Typing Club'.

We will continue read War Horse and students will continuing with planning their narratives.

Maths:

In our recent lessons, students have been exploring the properties of numbers, focusing on identifying factors and determining the highest and lowest common factors. They also learned how to calculate the perimeter and area of various shapes, enhancing their understanding of geometry. Additionally, students practised reading, writing, and ordering six-digit numbers, with an emphasis on grouping them into threes and using commas for clarity.

Preview for Learning:

Students are learning to decompose and partition a number.

Inquiry

This term, students will be participating in Inquiry rotations, moving between the three Grade 5 classrooms to explore a variety of topics related to promoting health. Each teacher will be focusing on a different aspect of health, allowing students to gain a well-rounded understanding of the subject. This week, during our first session, students learned about Physical Health, Safety, and the impact of Social Media.
