Learning in Action
Literacy:
This fortnight, students continued reading to a partner for fluency, using either their Sparkle reader or the class novel, Matilda. As a class, we continued reading Matilda, along with supportive non fiction texts. These enriched their background knowledge connected with the novel study. Students began planning and drafting a narrative, challenging themselves to include powerful words and adverbial phrases. We continued to focus on sentence level grammar writing tasks, Word Work for phonics and of course, handwriting.

In addition to the regular literacy learning areas, in the next fortnight, students will complete their narrative writing and will begin to explore the persuasive genre. Reading goal groups will also be in full swing and those students on Sparkle will be taking their readers home to practice regularly.
Maths:
This fortnight, students have developed their place value knowledge of numbers through making and representing numbers and identifying if they are odd or even (by looking at the last place/digit within the number). Students practised this by playing a partner game where they rolled a 2 or 3 digit number for their partner to determine if it was odd or even and explain how they knew, recording these numbers in a table in their maths book. They viewed MAB representations of 3 digit numbers and recorded these numbers in a place value chart on their mini whiteboards. This week, students began working on their individual maths goals. They have spent time with the teacher to focus on their goal, followed by time with their peers to practice, as well as having independent time on the Chromebooks to complete maths tasks related to their goal.
To deepen their understanding of length, students have begun their investigation of measuring dinosaur footprints. They selected appropriate measuring tools, measured the footprints and recorded the lengths using correct units (e.g. cm).

Students will continue exploring place value, with a focus on expanding numbers (e.g. 256 = 200+50+6) and zero as a place holder (e.g. 2096: the 0 is taking the place of the hundreds). They will also continue to work towards their individual goals.
Students will use their length recordings to compare and order the footprints from shortest to longest.
Knowledge Rich: (previously known as Inquiry)
Students have enjoyed beginning their ‘Healthy Me’ unit over the past fortnight. Students have explored different ways we can stay healthy and help to relax our minds. Students brainstormed different strategies they like to use and shared with their peers. This included, exercising, journaling, cuddling a pet, listening to music, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet. The grade 3 students loved participating in role play activities, as they acted out scenarios where they can be a good friend to someone. For example, how can we be good friends …..
*if Mum isn’t feeling well
*if we see someone playing by themselves
*if we notice someone fall over

Looking ahead, students will begin to look at the positive impact exercise has not only on our bodies but our minds. Students will explore how the respiratory system works and record their heart rates before and after exercising. The grade 3 students will also learn about different foods and how healthy foods can make us feel.
Wellbeing:
This fortnight as part of Friendology, students began to look at their ‘inner ninja’ and how we need to show kindness to ourselves as if we were our own best friend. Students also explored strategies for making new friends, through role play scenarios and creating a question they can use when they meet a new friend.
Students also discussed emotions, practicing identifying them with other people through the ‘emotional echo’ game. Students had to identify what physical signs someone might show when they were feeling happy, sad, angry, excited, etc.
Preview
During the next fortnight, students will be revising some friendship facts; that no friendship is perfect, every friendship is different, trust and respect are the two most important parts of friendship, and friendships change and that is ok. Students will also be using the ‘friend-o-meter’ to help identify whether or not a friendship is a healthy one.
