Literacy
This fortnight in our Little Learners program, the children have begun an exciting adventure into the world of letters and early literacy! We kicked off with the introduction of Milo Monkey and his friends—each representing a letter of the alphabet: s, a, t, p, i, n &m. The focus has been on practising both the names and sounds of these letters, helping to lay a strong foundation for reading and writing.
In handwriting, the children have been introduced to Peggy Leggo patterns, which guide them in the proper structure for forming the letters of the alphabet. These patterns have made letter formation engaging and easy to follow! Alongside this, the children have participated in various fine motor activities designed to strengthen their hands, preparing them for more confident handwriting.
In our Literacy unit, children have been reading a range of books centered around the theme of starting school. These stories have sparked rich discussions, encouraging the children to connect with the characters and each other, while fostering their growing love for reading.
Preview of learning: Children will explore more of Milo’s alphabet friends, we will continue to read and explore picture storybooks about starting school. Students will work on our Sentence level Grammar focusing on letters.
Numeracy
Over the first few weeks of school, students have engaged in various collaborative number games such as race to ten, buzz and cover that number. These games have not only fostered teamwork but also strengthened their understanding of numbers in a fun, interactive way. This week, students focused on the number 1, exploring the different ways it can be represented. They enjoyed showing the number 1 using tally marks, dice, five frames, and the written word. Through these activities, students also discussed real-world examples of the number 1, such as "1 nose" and "1 sun," helping them make connections between math and their everyday lives.
Students learnt strategies to count collections with accuracy and to "trust the count," reinforcing the importance of careful counting. They were also introduced to 2D shapes, learning the names of common shapes like circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. They practised describing the unique features of each shape, building their vocabulary and understanding of geometry.
Preview of learning: We will learn about the number two and also introduce students to our Maths number goals and learn to make and represent numbers.
Inquiry
Over the last fortnight, the Preps have been working through our Knowledge Rich unit ‘I’m a Pegasus’. We have read about and practised the different routines, expectations and behaviour norms we have in place at LPS. Students have started to familiarise themselves with the different specialist teachers and staff members they will come across! All students know which colour house they belong to and they are excited to share the team spirit!
Preview of learning: Next fortnight, we will be looking at what our whole school assemblies look like, and we will practice our whole body listening and the Acknowledgement of Country!
Wellbeing
Over the past fortnight, as students have started settling into classroom learning and routines, we have completed different mindfulness activities. These activities allowed students to have the chance to reset and regulate before beginning a new task.

Next fortnight we will be beginning our Friendology and Respectful Relations program. Students will be looking at how to create healthy friendships and how to treat each other like best friends. They will also be learning how to ask and offer help in different situations.
Curious Corner
Over the next fortnight, the Prep students will visit our ‘Curious Corner’ play-based learning space. Students will engage in various activities, including building, market stall, puppet show, puzzles/games, doll house and the calm corner.
