First Nations Connections

Thursday February the 13th marked 17 years since the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave his speech in Parliament that has now become known as the Apology Speech.
The Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group held a Breakfast at the Queen’s Gardens in Shepparton at 8am.
Remembering this historic occasion is one way we, as a community, can keep the narrative going and take steps towards justice and healing. We had a large contingent of students and families represent St Brendan’s at the Apology Day breakfast last Thursday at the Queens Gardens. Our students were amazing ambassadors for their school and for many, their culture.
It was a very proud moment for Yurri Atkinson-Briggs in Year 3, who read out the Welcome to Country. Yurri is a proud Yort Yorta boy and a wonderful ambassador for his culture and our school. Well done Yurri.
Our school community has over 30 Indigenous students who are proud of their culture and identity. In support of our Indigenous students we are committed to further building collaborative relationships among our students, staff and the traditional owners of the area on which our school stands. Throughout the year, we hope to provide meaningful opportunities for our students to engage in various projects that celebrates their Indigenous heritage and culture. We aim to nurture an authentic relationship with our Indigenous families and their children, one which is collaborative, skill building and supportive of the history, passions and talents of our Indigenous community.
Thank you again to all the families who attended the National Apology breakfast.
