Year 4/5

History
65,000 years ago, our earliest first peoples inhabited the land we know call home. We have been exploring our earliest histories dating back to the Dreamings, creation and connection to Country for the First Nations Peoples. We have learned about the early years of exploration and the work of Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan and their voyages to establish trade routes for spices and to circumnavigate the globe. The next big era of exploration saw the First Fleet set sail from Great Britain with convicts aboard to help build a new colony on the shores of Botany Bay. January of 1788 marked the beginning of the European colonisation of Australia and forever changed the lives of the traditional Aboriginal owners and custodians of the land.
Maths
Times tables champions! We have been practising our times tables every day in Maths and it is starting to show. Students work in learning partners to master their multiplication fluency. Once we meet a personal best of 40+ correct, three days in a row, we move on to our next times tables for our next challenge. We have also been learning about fractions and how they make up part of a whole and place value and understanding how much each digit is worth depending on what place value it is in. We have been using different strategies for addition and subtraction of small and large numbers.
Literacy
Our literacy sessions have been jam packed with historical information. In our learning partners, we have been practising reading out loud with accuracy and fluency. Through our reading we are introduced to new vocabulary including navigator, exploration, circumnavigate and hulk. We haven't stopped there with learning new words. We have also been focusing on mastering the suffix 'cial', 'tial' and 'ture' spelling patterns. We are really passionate about creative writing so we have made Mondays our free write day where we can write down all of the wonderful ideas in our heads. This gives us a chance to draft, edit and publish our work throughout the term.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN is fast approaching for our year 3 and 5 students, and it’s important to note that during this time, a variety of assessments will be scheduled at specific times throughout the day. These assessments are one way to gauge a students' progress in key areas. However, if a student happens to miss a scheduled session there will be catch up sessions scheduled for the following week.
