As mentioned in the last newsletter, our Grade 5/6s students went to Canberra during Week 3. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding to our school in the amount of $45.00per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Here are some student reflections about some of the many amazing activities on Canberra camp:
Governors house
It was amazing to see such a famous Australian place. It was even better since we met the Governer General, she represents the king in Australia. The place was so pretty and very empty. They have a lake out the back, a really special car and a massive drive way. It was interesting to learn about what the Governor General does. We all asked sports questions, which might have been a bit weird, but it was very fun and interesting to see such a famous old place. -Angie
Flip Out !
On the second night of Canberra camp we went to Flip Out trampoline park. It was really fun and we got to go there from 7 pm to 9 pm. We got to play lots of activities like ninja courses, rock walls and most importantly, gang up with the teachers. The students won against three staff, Miss. Petzke Mr. Beaton and Mr. Callaghan. We had the best time with all the 5/6s and that’s FLIP OUT! - Isla C
The AIS (Australian Institute of Sports)
On Day 3, the 12th of February, 2025 Canberra camp, the 5/6’s went to the Australian Institute of Sport. We found it really interesting and interactive, some of the interactive sport games were a ski simulation, footy and rugby kicking simulation and a pull up timer. Speaking of the pull up timer, the 5/6’s did a boys vs girls challenge, because there was a timer to see how long you would last, we would hold one of the girls on our shoulders and so would the boys... of course the girls won with over 1100 seconds. After all the simulations, we went to the gift shop. I bought a cute little kangaroo with the AIS logo on its belly. After, we hopped back on the bus to our next adventure. - Scarlett
War Memorial
At Five/ Six Canberra Camp, we went to the war memorial. While we were there, we saw old clothes and weapons from when the first and second world war started. When we walked around the museum,we also learned about lots of historical stories. When we were walking around, there were little diorama statues, like people in war and there were sound effects with it. Then we got evacuated from a strange alarm, so we had to sit out the front for like 45 minutes, but we continued our learning out there about the war story, 'Lone Pine' before going back in to the museum.- Sienna
