The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program 2024

Please read the following attachments from Ms Tiziana Scimone about the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program for 2024. There are some exciting developments happening with the Stephanie Alexander Garden Program. Ms Scimone has been working hard to establish some connections with the broader community. One of these is with an organisation called Farmer's Pick. Through this initiative you will be able to order weekly boxes of fresh fruit and veg that will be delivered to school for you to collect. Each week St. Augustine's will receive a box of produce to use in support of the kitchen garden program. Through doing this you also directly support Victorian farmers.

Ciao A tutti!

Italian classes 2024

What a great start to the term! The Prep children are starting to learn how to greet and introduce themselves in Italian.  Charlie K from Prep J was so excited to share his pasta book with all the preps which then started many pasta conversations at home. Guess what was on the menu for dinner ???  Yr 1/2 children are working on their word bank, the Yr 3/4 children are starting to write a short piece about themselves and the Yr 5/6 children are starting to write a letter to their Prep buddy. The children are very excited to get back into the Italian classroom.  Let the fun begin!

We also had a prep Italian buddy session last week.  ‘Learning Italian with my buddy.’  learning new words and phrases in small groups. Enjoy the photos. (The photos are also on display outside the school office.)

Year 3/4 Kitchen Garden

This week the Year 3/4 students enjoyed a hands on cooking session. They made delicious Rice paper Rolls. The students practiced their skills of cutting, chopping, slicing, stiring and rolling. Eventhough these rice paper rolls were a new taste experience for some children, the majority stretched their tastebuds and ate their homemade rice paper roll. Please encourage your child to try new foods and give new flavours a go. The students could choose what they put inside their rolls. Some of the ingredients were bean shoots, tofu, cucumber, carrot, coriander, mint and vermicelli noodles. We look forward to next weeks menu!!!

3/4 Christian Meditation

A great way to start each day is with a Christian Meditation. We have been learning about different ways of praying and Christian Meditation is one way we do this at St Augustine's.

It helps the students relax, focus on their breathing, sit with correct posture, practise control of their bodies and talk to God. So far we can sit for 4 mins without interruption. After meditation, the students are ready to commence their work calmly and with more focus and attention.

District Swimming- Year 3-6

Congratulations to the students attend the district swimming. They had lots of fun competing with other students and cheering each other on.

Special congratulations to:

Physical Education

In the first two weeks of the term, we hosted a hockey clinic with the Footscray Hockey Club for our Year 1/2 and 3/4 students. It was wonderful to see everyone trying out new skills and having fun! We're grateful to the hockey club for giving us this opportunity.

The Prep students have been having so much fun in their PE lessons, learning and participating in a variety of different games to build and practise fundamental motor skills.

The Year 5/6 students have been enthusiastic about their PE lessons, starting a unit on Badminton and practicing their serves and rallying with partners.

Bunnings Visit to St.Augustine's

This Term, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program has been so far a great learningexperience for students in Year 3/4. Recently, the Bunnings store in West Footscray has generouslydonated a worm and compost farm to the program, which has added an exciting element of sustainability.Suzy from Bunnings visited the students and taught them about the importance of sustainability and howto effectively set up and use the worm and compost farm. The students were eager to learn and used theused the necessary ingredients such as cardboard, paper, food scraps, water and to create a thrivingenvironment for the worms. Suzy also discussed the significance of using worm castings as naturalfertilizer for the future fruit and vegetable garden. This experience not only taught students aboutsustainability but instilled a sense of responsibility towards the environment, making them aware of theirimpact on it. Thanks to Suzy and Bunnings, the students are now equipped with new knowledge andskills that will benefit them in taking care our school garden and their future garden endeavours forcreating a home garden.
