Heywire

Congratulations to Lara our school captain - Winner of a the Heywire writing competition.

Heywire is a story telling competition for young people (16-22) living in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia, that allows them to tell their story or share an experience about living where they live. On February 2nd I met at the airport with some of the other winners coming from Victoria, where together we flew up to Canberra to meet the rest of the winners, from all corners of Australia. Whilst we were there, we formed different groups based on what we think are prominent issues for kids like us in other rural areas, I was in the group of “fun opportunities” and alongside four other winners, came up with the idea of a youth initiative public transport system, that is tailored to each community for the needs and wants of young people. My highlight of the trip was the 5th and final day and night, where we presented our idea at parliament house in front of people from all different departments and grant/funding organisations that will one day, make our idea a reality. We got dressed up after the big 5 days and enjoyed a super fancy 3-course meal in the great hall. The experience was definitely not what I initially expected, but I made so many new friends and had the best time.

The award is an opportunity to join a Kokoda trek with ‘Adventure Kokoda’ in the July school holidays (July 3-13).

In VCE Chemistry, Energy is the underlying theme, whether it’s about energy from our food to fuel our daily activities, or energy to support our transport and communication needs. We are learning about how different chemical interactions produce energy. Some of the reactions are “green” and have minimal impact on the environment. Some are “brown” and contribute to enormous environment and resource degradation. Some chemical reactions produce energy, mostly as heat, they are referred to as “exothermic reactions”. Other chemical reactions absorb energy as heat. They are called “endothermic reactions”.

The Year 12 Chemistry crew would especially like to acknowledge Rebecca and Dianne, our Lab Techs for the enormous amount of work in setting up a solid week of practical activities and experiments that survived rescheduling after last week’s storm damage and class cancellations.
