This week we have rolled back the covers over the garden beds near the chicken coop…

In Term 2, the Year 3/4 students planted jonquil, daffodil and tulip bulbs in these garden beds and they’ve started to flower! We hope you enjoy looking at the flowers, but please don’t pull them out, and please don’t walk on the edge of the garden beds. We want these beautiful flowers to look good for as long as possible.

Fun fact: When the flowers die and the leaves turn yellow, the nutrients from the plant go back down into the bulb that is in the soil. We can either leave the bulbs in the ground, or we can dig them out, put them in the fridge, then plant them again next autumn!

Our Prep students have been learning about the weather. They have looked at familiar road signs, noticing that only a couple of colours are used, and the symbols are quite basic. They used this knowledge to design their own weather symbols, just like what we can see in the TV weather report. They are now learning about the different types of clouds and the water cycle.

The Year 1/2 students have been enjoying their unit about prehistoric animals and how they compare to modern animals. This week, they have been learning about fossils, and Victoria’s very own little dinosaur, Leaellynasaura Amicagraphica. If you have been to the Cape Otway National Park, you may have stood on the same ground as this dinosaur and her herd!

Students in Year 3/4 have started learning about the Design Thinking process, which they need to apply to solve a packaging and posting problem. Working in teams, they are brainstorming ideas to create packaging for a very fragile item so it can travel successfully by post to its destination. Earlier in the term, they analysed different packaging materials, so this knowledge will be very helpful in solving the problem.

Year 5/6 students have been learning about how plants and animals adapt to survive in desert environments. They have investigated the functions of microscopic plant features, and how the surface area of an animal’s ear may be beneficial or detrimental to its ability to cool down in a hot environment. All Year 5/6 students are also competing in this year’s science competition, researching endangered and vulnerable animals, and suggesting how people can protect these animals so they do not become extinct.

All CJC students are invited to join in the science competition, the details of which you will find in this week’s newsletter. Good luck!

Digi Tech during Book Week 📚

On Wednesday’s dress up day, Prep D used the app 'Clips' to take photos of each other in their costumes, record themselves explaining who they were dressed up as and decorated their clips with stickers, words and filters.

5/6 DIGI TECH – Autonomous Machine Project

Over the last term and a half, students followed the design thinking process to empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test their own autonomous machine designs to solve real-world problems. They learned to conduct research to identify needs, brainstorm innovative solutions, and create detailed prototypes using physical and digital tools. For example, some students designed machines that could help reduce plastic waste or assist people with disabilities. They built a prototype using the Lego Spike kits and made improvements with the base design by including a range of sensors, motors and attachments. Next, students had to code these prototypes to fit the purpose of their designs, showcasing their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Students were highly engaged as they demonstrated the ability to apply technology to solve real-world problems.

Athletics Results

On Friday our 3-6 students travelled down to Duncan Mackinnon Reserve for the annual CJC Athletics Carnival. Grey skies threatened to break through multiple times during the day however, all events were able to be completed. A big congratulations to all students who gave tremendous effort and showed fantastic sportsmanship. A big thank you to our staff and parent helpers for ensuring the day ran very smoothly. The District Athletics competition will be held on the 6th of September. More information will be released to our students and families over the coming days.
