News from Music and Performing Arts

Mini concert

Our Performing Arts Mini Concert was a huge success! Prep students teamed up with a Grade 1 class for their dance and music performances, while Grade 2 students paired with a Grade 3 class to showcase their talents. The concerts were incredibly entertaining, highlighting the students' performance skills and teamwork. The songs that the students performed were based around Respect and Learning which are some of our school values. It was wonderful to see such an encouraging and supportive audience cheering on our young performers.

Grade Prep

It has been great to have the Grade Prep students for the first time this year for Performing Arts – Music. Our focus so far has been about the Orchestra and Conductor and learning about the four different families of instruments used. Following on from this, the students have been playing along to beats, patterns and short songs using a range of the Percussion instruments. They will also get the opportunity to create their own short song with these instruments to share with their peers including having others to play their song whilst they be the conductor. Learning to play these instruments, along with playing along to songs as a group, will assist them later in the semester when they perform a song for the mini concert with the Grade 1 students.

Grade 1

Our Grade 1 students are having a wonderful time learning to use sock puppets in class. They are showing different emotions using their bodies and their puppets. They are also learning to change their voices to bring different characters to life. Students will be learning a script and preparing for an in-class performance. Through this activity, students are recognising and learning to discuss different emotions. Later in the semester, students will be focusing on dance, learning a routine that will be performed at our mini concert with the Prep grades.

Grade 2

It has been great to work with the Grade 2 students this Semester. The focus so far has been to extend their prior knowledge and experience with the Percussion family of instruments. Students have been given the opportunity to play along to different songs using a range of these instruments but also understand, and deliver, a short performance as a group. Working together to play a song requires them to develop their skills relating to when to start and stop playing and what tempo to play along to so that they sound great as a group. This will be a focus throughout the semester as they use other instruments from different families that will assist them later in the semester when they perform at their mini concert with the Grade 3 students.

Grade 3

Our Grade 3 students are currently engaged in an exciting project where they are developing and creating their own performances based on the story of "The Three Little Pigs." Working in small groups, they are using their expressive skills to bring the characters and events of the story to life. Each group is devising unique performances, showcasing their creativity and teamwork. The students are preparing for an in-class performance, where they will share their imaginative interpretations with their peers. Later in the semester students will be developing their dance skills, learning a routine that will be performed at our mini concert with the Grade 2’s.

Grade 6 Band

At the end of Term 2 the Grade 6 band performed at the annual School of Rock Day. Primary and Secondary schools from the northern region came together to share some of the songs they have been learning and perform to each other. It is a great opportunity for our students to watch other schools, learn from that experience of performing and build their skills and confidence for future performances. This was their first performance for the year, and they did a fantastic job on the two songs that they played. This semester, the band will be working on some new songs to add to their list and continue crafting their performance skills and overall stage presence in the lead up to the Art Show performance later in the year.
