Academic Sports Program

On 30th of July and 1st and 2nd of August, Sunbury College hosted Sunbury Heights Primary School, Killara Primary School, and Sunbury West Primary School athletics carnivals. These 3 days were a great opportunity for Sunbury College to engage with the local Sunbury schools and to help the schools have access to facilities and resources while the Sunbury athletics track is under construction. 

Over the 3 days, the Academic Sport Program students participated in the facilitation of the athletics events. Students in the program were assigned to an age group where their responsibility was to be a leader to the primary school students, demonstrate the fundamentals of skills required for events, run events, and ultimately, guide the students to success by motivating and encouraging them. 

I had the opportunity to support Year 9 and 10 girls as they assisted the running of the events. I was so impressed with their enthusiasm and the great sportsmanship shown on the day. Who knows, maybe we will see these students represent Australia in 2032!

It was an awesome few days spent with the primary schools. Stepping into a leadership role, for not only the kids, but also the teachers was a new experience for me and many others. Most of the days were spent helping an age group at each of the events where we would take measurements and times, also occasionally using our knowledge to inform teachers about rules of the event. Seeing each of the primary school kids form bonds with the high school students that they will keep for a long time was a highlight.

We are so proud of all the students who participated in the athletics carnivals as they represented our college and demonstrated our values, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Endeavour with pride and determination, while also developing their own interpersonal skills with confidence which they can use in the real world. 

On behalf of the Sunbury College team, we would like to thank Sunbury Heights P.S, Killara P.S and Sunbury West P.S for allowing us to host their special day and providing our students with memories and skills which they will remember and use for the rest of their lives.
