Primary school athletics at Sunbury College
Week 3 was a big week at Sunbury College hosting three different primary schools across the course of four days. Due to ongoing works at the local athletics track, Killara PS, Sunbury Heights PS and Sunbury West PS turned to our front oval which was turned into an 8 lane 200 metre track and the 400 metre course.
Our Academic Sport Program students played a lead role in the running of each day, working closely with the primary schools’ Physical Education teachers and classroom teachers to run events, keep results, and manage equipment. A big thank you to Demie Klaromenos (Academic Sports Program Leader) and Brett Martin (Sports Coordinator) who coordinated the student helpers and set up on the day. We would also like to pass on our gratitude to Candeece Brown for help with music and the set up of the speakers, and Sean Jansen, our facilities manager, who did a power of work marking the track, setting up (and repairing Marquees) and preparing the long jump pit.
Without the collective efforts of many people, the carnivals on site at Sunbury College would not have been possible. Sunbury College’s Physical Education team also lost access to the front oval and the courts over the three days, and we thank you for your flexibility and forward planning. Congratulations to all of the primary school students and staff. It was our pleasure hosting you, we hope you had as much fun as we did!
First Aid and going homesick from school
When a student feels unwell and would like to go home sick, they must report to Student Services at the front office, where a member of our Education Support team will allow the student to access the sick bay.
If it is determined that the student may need to leave school, the Education Support team member will then call the student’s parent/guardian to arrange pick up.In recent weeks, we have seen several parents arrive at the front office to pick up their ill child, without any notice to Student Services. It is evident that the student has contacted their parents directly, bypassing the College sick bay processes. This also contravenes the College phone policy and is a breach of the statewide phone ban in schools.
We ask for parent/guardian support in following College processes in relation to sick bay and the mobile phone policy, reinforcing to their child/children that they should not access their mobile phone during the school day and if they feel unwell to report to sick bay where the College will call home if required.
Course Selection
Over the past few weeks, students in Years 8 to 11 have been finalising their subject choices as part of the course selection process for 2025. The course counselling sessions for students in Year 10 were very well attended by students and their parents/carers, and students in Year 8 and 9 also spent time talking about the subjects they would like to study next year. Thank you to all staff who have been involved in supporting this process, and engaging in discussions with students and their families.
Selected Year 9 students were also interviewed as candidates for the accelerated studies program; the quality of discussion and forethought from the students was excellent. Congratulations to all students who have been recommended as suitable candidates for an accelerated VCE/VET subject in 2025. Thank you to Ms Brie Berzins, Ms Megan Fitzgerald, and Ms Christine Polonidis for leading the interviews and supporting students with their applications.
Naarm Engagement Program
Thank you to all staff and students for their engagement in the Naarm Program organised and led by Ms Christine Polonidis. So far this term, students have participated in ice skating, a visit to the Eureka sky deck, and a visit to the Holocaust museum.
Whilst the majority of our students have conducted themselves with respect and responsibility when using public transport, it is important to remember that when students are interacting with members of the public, they must demonstrate our College values at all times.
Uniform Expectations
At Sunbury College, we take pride in our school uniform, which reflects our values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Endeavour. All students are expected to adhere to the uniform guidelines as outlined on the College website.
Students must wear the correct and complete school uniform at all times, including travel to and from school. We encourage parents and carers to support their children in meeting these expectations by ensuring they have the correct uniform items and that they leave home dressed appropriately each day. If you are experiencing financial hardship and need support with uniform, please contact your child’s coordinator.
