A message from our acting principal Fiona Scott-Young
It has been a very productive and busy start to Term 3 for our Sunbury College community. This term I have observed many students across classes that are actively engaged in learning and students striving for academic excellence. I would encourage all students to remain focused on their learning, continue responding to teacher feedback, make the most of every opportunity in the classroom, and complete homework and further study at home to consolidate their learning.
Over the first five weeks, we have been focusing on celebrating our many successes throughout the term. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of these wonderful achievements, programs, and events across the school:
Hosting Primary School Athletics Carnivals
During week 3 we were delighted to host three local primary schools’ athletics carnivals. Fortunately, we had our new shelters (using our building fund) installed on the front oval, so that spectators could watch in comfort. The stands have been utilised by all our physical education classes. Our staff and students worked eagerly alongside the primary schools to set up events, participate in cross aged events and to support, encourage and cheer throughout the day. We are immensely proud of our senior students' involvement across the 3 days. They continually upheld our school values and were fantastic ambassadors for our school. Our sporting teams continue to dominate on and off the field in various sports, which will be mentioned in more detail in this newsletter.
Curriculum Day
On Wednesday 31 July our teaching and education support staff participated in a Curriculum Day which focused on student voice and agency, and inclusive practice. I would like to thank Mr Antony Monteleone and Ms Madeleine Graham for their meticulous planning and presentations throughout the day. We are very fortunate to have these talented staff members delivering high quality professional learning to our staff. For the first time in Sunbury College’s history, students were invited to co-facilitate workshops with staff on increasing engagement, building self-regulation and self-efficacy, and building collaborative skills in the classroom. It was wonderful to see our staff learning from students and the positive interactions and outcomes that these workshops will bring to our school for many years to come.
Student Leadership
I would like to shine a spotlight on the many achievements of our student leaders across the school this term and know this will be mentioned in more detail in this newsletter. Congratulations to our Year 10 student Rhiannon Trotman-Scerri for receiving the Hume Youth Opportunity. This is a truly wonderful achievement and recognises Rhiannon’s dedication to achieving her school and future pathways goals. We had several of our students representing Sunbury College at the awards ceremony, from singing to the master of ceremonies. Our student leaders have been actively involved in many aspects of Sunbury College life and I would like to commend them for their enthusiasm, inspiration and innovation. They have many exciting projects on the go, so please enjoy reading about these in this issue.
Celebrating the Performing Arts
This term, I want to acknowledge our talented students that are participating in the 2024 Victorian State School Spectacular: Eloise Henry, Isobel Henry, Macey Harvie, Ruby Edwards, Travis Boase and Jinx Bailey. We are also extremely proud of our Year 12 student Jamila Lucero who won the ‘Take the Mic Australia’ competition open division which has opened an extensive pathway as a vocalist. Jamila is one of our lead roles in our upcoming production of High School Musical. Rehearsals are well underway, and it is shaping up to be one of our best musicals to date. I would encourage you to buy tickets as they are selling out fast. The production will take place from Wednesday 4 September until Friday 6 September. I would like to thank all cast and staff in advance for their commitment and dedication to showcasing the performing arts to our Sunbury community.
As we move forward into Term 3, let’s continue to embrace our school values of respect, responsibility, resilience and endeavour that define our Sunbury College community. Each term brings new opportunities for growth and achievement, and together we can all make the most of them. Let’s support each other to continue to strive for excellence in our academic and extra-curricular activities and make it a successful and rewarding remainder of the term.
Warm regards
Fiona Scott-Young
