POTATO OLYMPICS
All Year 1/2 students participated in the Potato Olympic Games to celebrate the Paris 2024 Olympics. They chose a potato for a competitor, decorated it, gave it an Athletes Profile and their potato was involved in a range of maths tasks. Some of the tasks included measuring length, weight, capacity and time linking with Olympic Games events. Students especially loved the ‘SpudPut’ on the last day, where their potato athlete was launched as far as possible on the basketball court!
WRITING
In writing, students have been learning about the structure of Narratives. They planned an exciting story around the topic of science using the Lucas Narrative Template. They then followed their planner to write their own story including an introduction, rising action, problem and solution. Students were encouraged to independently edit and enhance their writing and action feedback provided by the teacher. Students then published and illustrated their writing.
INTEGRATED STUDIES
In Integrated Studies, students have been investigating Chemical Sciences. This week they have looked into the 5 senses and how our bodies depend on them for everyday use. For this task students had to use their sense of smell to guess what was inside the cup. The scents included lavender, garlic, honey, mint, lemon, vegemite and coffee.
PERFORMING ARTS
What a fantastic start to Term 3 we have had in Performing Arts; I want to thank all students for welcoming me kindly and showing me the Lucas Primary School way. We have been busy finishing off our Drama unit before we move on to Dancing and dance the term away. Our Prep to Year 2 students have been portraying different characters and emotions, focusing on how we can use body movement and facial expression to bring our characters and emotions to life. Our Grade 3-6 students have been working towards reading a scripted play, focusing on and embracing the character they are depicting. After a couple of weeks of practise, the students presented their plays to their peers. It was wonderful to see students embracing their roles and using different tones, pitches and voices to really embrace their character.
YOUNG AUTHORS PROGRAM
Our Lucas Young Authors attended their second workshop during Week 4 this term. Travelling to the Scotsburn campus of Buninyong Primary School, we were treated to mobs of kangaroos on the bus ride before arriving. We completed four workshops including Scott Gardiner who talked about how to fill an empty page and explained his writing process to us with his fantastic humour.
Olivia Wearne spoke to us about inspiration and recommended using raggedy notebooks as a starting point, so you don’t feel like your writing has to be perfect.
We learnt about writing dialogue and explored minibeasts in a classroom who became our inspiration for our character conversations which we wrote. Lastly, Mr Muldoon taught us to write songs by counting syllables and using rhyme, which was a huge hit! We were treated to a mash-up of songs we had written at the end of the session, which was amazing!
It was a jam-packed day full of advice, writing, workshopping and laughing. We are really looking forward to our next workshop in just a few weeks!
