Curriculum Matters

Foundation

On Thursday 15 August, our Foundation students had the best time dressing up as some of their favourite book characters to celebrate this year’s book week - ‘Reading is Magic’.

Some of our favourite books to read are -

  • Thelma the Unicorn
  • Alpacas with Maracas
  • Milo’s Birthday Surprise
  • The Little Mermaid
  • The Enchanted Wood
  • Frozen
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Tinker Bell
  • Rapunzel

Level 1

We really enjoyed dressing up for Book Week in Level 1.

We also had lots of fun meeting with our buddies to read a book and do an activity with them. We have also been enjoying reading Premier’s Reading Challenge books in class.

In Numeracy we have had a focus on Subtraction over the past two week and have played a number of subtraction games.

In writing, we have created our own imaginary animals and written information reports about them.

Level 2

The Level 2 students are excited to learn how to read the time, practicing with both analog and digital clocks.

They have been exploring the concepts of hours and minutes, understanding how to identify the time to the nearest hour, half-hour and quarter hour. Through hands-on activities, students are developing confidence in telling the time which helps them keep track of their playtime, snack time, and more!

Level 3

Level 3 recently visited Polly Woodside in South Wharf, where the students engaged in many different activities to enrich their learning about life on board ships to understand what it would have been like to travel on The First Fleet.

The students were set to work by the Captain and had to do jobs on the boat such as scrubbing the deck and they got to have a go at steering the wheel!

They also learnt more about the Wurundjeri culture and what life was like for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people before the settlement. The children embodied various roles including the animals, the chefs, the hunters and the eagles to act out a natural hunting scene. All of the students had such a fantastic time despite the rain.

Thank you so much to the parent helpers for coming along!

Level 4

Level 4 has had a busy couple of weeks. Finishing off learning about the Olympic games and having a very special guest Travis Brooks visit. Travis played for the Australian men's hockey team the Kookaburras.

He shared with us his gold and bronze Olympic medals as well as the Commonwealth gold medal. The students really enjoyed hearing about all the preparation in the lead up to the games as well as what life was like in the Olympic village.

Level 4 also enjoyed book week, the parade, book fair and working with another class on a book activity. On Wednesday we all participated in the Soccer clinics.

Level 5

This week, Level 5 students were excited to be learning about financial budgeting.

Each student has been given a budget or either 1,000,000 or 10,000,000 and are required to SHOP TILL YOU DROP. Using real life prices, students have the opportunity to spend their budget as they wish, with a challenge of having under $100 change at the end.

It has been lots of fun to be able to practise our financial budgeting skills shopping for real life purchases.
