Cultivating Courage, Persistence and Exam Readiness
Dear Students, Parents, and Staff,
As we approach the pointy end of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to discuss two essential qualities—courage and persistence—and their pivotal role in our preparation for the upcoming exams. As our students move into Term 4, our Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students in particular, will be preparing and working towards their end of year exams. Regardless of what we think about exams, they are and for the foreseeable future, will remain an essential aspect of the educational landscape. In fact, our students will face a lifetime of “exam type” situations and will need the confidence and courage to face these challenges.
In reflecting on the characteristics needed for our students to succeed in life, the qualities of courage and persistence come to mind. When we talk about successful students, we recognise students who work with a growth mindset and value effort and persistence over natural ability. I remember attending an educational forum a few years ago and a scholar from a university in Singapore explained that students in Singapore tend to be very successful because they are raised on a mindset that correlates hard work and persistence to academic success. A growth mindset is aligned with a commitment to always trying to improve and grow from the feedback provided. As parents, it is important we encourage our children/students to stay focused and work hard toward achieving their goals.
Courage and persistence are vital in the face of academic challenges. Courage is not just about grand gestures but also about making daily decisions to face our fears, whether it's tackling a difficult subject or seeking help when needed. It’s the bravery to step outside our comfort zone and approach each exam with a positive mindset. Persistence, on the other hand, is the steadfast determination to keep working towards our goals, even when the going gets tough. It’s about maintaining effort and focus, especially when we encounter obstacles or setbacks.
Effective exam preparation requires a blend of these qualities. Courage will drive you to confront difficult topics head-on, while persistence will ensure you remain dedicated to your study plan. Here are a few strategies to harness these traits for exam success:
- Set Clear Goals: Break down your study material into manageable sections and set specific, achievable goals for each study session. This will help you stay focused and measure your progress.
- Create a Study Schedule: Develop a realistic timetable that balances study time with rest. Consistent, organised study sessions will build your confidence and reduce stress.
- Seek Help When Needed: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from teachers, peers, or tutors. It takes courage to admit you need assistance, but it’s a crucial step towards mastering the material.
- Practice Self-Care: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks. Taking care of your physical and mental health will keep you energised and focused.
- Stay Positive: Approach your studies with a positive attitude. Visualise your success and use positive affirmations to keep yourself motivated.
Parents and guardians, your support is invaluable during this period. Encourage your children to adopt these strategies and provide a supportive environment that fosters both courage and persistence.
The role staff play in guiding and motivating our students cannot be overstated. Our teachers and support staff are committed to continuing to inspire our students through their own examples and by offering the support our students need to thrive.
Perseverance is also vital to growing in your faith; and God wants his people to persevere no matter what happens, so we have to learn how to overcome obstacles, difficulties, trials and tribulations to experience victory in Christ. We have two choices when faced with hardship - trust in God and keep our vision on Him or quit and abandon hope. God has so much more in store for us, and His plan for us is for struggles and hardships to become blessings and rewards if we persevere.
God promises to be our comfort and "ever present help in times of trouble" (Psalm 46:1) God has not abandoned you; and He will help you endure!
In Romans 5:3-5 we read,” 3 Not only so, but we[a] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” We are reminded through the word of God that He is with us in all that we do, through our triumphs and tribulations. Our students should walk toward the end of year exams confident that God is with them every step of the way and that courage and persistence will be strengthened by our faith in God and through our prayers.
In conclusion, let’s embrace the upcoming exams as an opportunity to showcase the courage and persistence we’ve cultivated throughout the year. With determination and a well-prepared approach, I am confident that each of our students can achieve their best.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication. Together, let’s all work toward a successful and rewarding exam season.
Best wishes,
Robert Tassoni
