Investigations

During Investigations, we aim to provide opportunities for the children to use their curiosity and interests to pose questions, plan and organise their action, and use their imagination and creativity to analyse, build and problem solve.

We use Blooms Taxonomy to broaden the children’s experiences and to go beyond just remembering facts and experiences but to analyse, evaluate and reflect.

Whole class:

● Teaching Point

This week our focus for our whole class discussions at the beginning of Investigations has been Well-being.

  • Identifying the signs from our body, when we feel angry.
  • Hurtful Vs helpful ways to deal with anger.
  • Strategies that help us become calm.

● Focus Children

Each Focus child is encouraged to bring an item, idea, experience or wondering to share with their class. This is an opportunity for students to practise their speaking and listening skills. We focus their attention on developing skills in using appropriate eye contact, body language, tone and voice, and how well they respond to their audience questions and comments.

Focus children work with the teacher throughout the session where they establish strategies and resources to support and find out about their wonderings.

● Reporter and Photographer

The Reporter and Photographer are given their tasks for the session. These revolve around a particular curriculum focus, which changes each time, but always includes English, Maths or Well-being, weekly. It could be the current spelling/grammar focus or maths concept or well-being practice.

● Small Group Area

Each provocation has a Learning Intention that is linked directly to our curriculum and learning outcomes. The children work in small groups to investigate the following provocations: Writers’ Workshop, Reading Corner, Coding and Robotics, Movie Theatre, Mini Makers, Sensory Zone, Mini Olympics, Entomology (Insects), Art Studio, Maths Zone, Creative Beads and Research Hub.

Whole Class: Sharing

At the end of the session, the Focus Children, Reporter and Photographer report back their findings and discuss how they could take their wonderings further.
