Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Levi Hudson

We all had a great time visiting Drouin Secondary School experiencing "A day in the life of a Secondary school student". The students went to a science lesson, Art and P.E. Everyone really enjoyed the activities and had a good look around the school. We were able to reconnect with former students, some of whom were our tour guides for the day. We even got the chance to attend the first performance of the school production which was fantastic!  Everyone had a great day!

This week we have completed a unit of work on fractions. We have used a variety of tools including fairy bread, milky way chocolate bars and some 'hands-on' equipment. Here's what some of our students had to say:

"Fractions are fun, it helped me understand.' - Annabelle.

"Maths was interesting." - Silas.

"I learnt how to double fractions." -Jeremy

"Fun, cool, awesome! I learnt fractions." -Ryder T

"It was really fun and it helped me a lot!" -Lucy

"I learnt how to make a fraction list. It was very fun." -Max

We are still investigating non-fiction texts in both reading and writing. The focus has been on producing an information report which includes a variety of extra text features. Students have been encouraed to use a rubric to help them identify their strengths and where they can improve their work. Our work during reading lessons has helped to support this.

We are all really enjoying working together in the BER building for a portion of our day, particularly working with students from the other class. We have worked hard to create an atmosphere of shared learning for everyone, and we are all making the most of it!

This week has been a dedicated assessment week as we begin collecting and collating our data for report writing. Everyone has done a great job of their individual project. Great work team!
