Learning & Teaching

In literacy this month, we've been delving into the world of language and storytelling! We have been learning about the use of metaphors within our favourite books and expanding our vocabulary through the use of Freyer models where we can begin using them in our everyday lives.

We have also been crafting thank-you letters, to the generous shop owners of Edwards S as part of our Genre writing: ‘Writing to Socialise’. As we see out the term, our children will be drawing upon the inspiration of previously encountered texts and creating their own stories.

 Addition and Subtraction

In Maths, the children will be learning to represent and solve addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies. These strategies include counting on, partitioning, and rearranging parts, among others. In addition, the children will understand the concept as combining quantities (e.g., "something and something make...") and will use the plus symbol (+) to denote this operation. The children will explore strategies such as counting on, partitioning, rearranging parts and many more.  In subtraction, the children will explore various strategies such as using facts of 10, counting back, counting up, using doubles, making a ten, and adding up. They will understand subtraction as takeaway and counting back to find the difference.

At Home:Deck of Cards:

Using a deck of cards, this  activity can be played with 2 to 4 people. Each person picks up two cards. They then need to add or subtract the two numbers and provide the answer.

Dice:

Make that Number is a simple dice game to practise addition and subtraction. All you need is 2 or 3 dice and a list of numbers 0-12 (for 2 dice) or 0-18 (for 3 dice). Children can roll the dice and add or subtract their numbers together. If they are using 3 dice, they can add one number and subtract the other.

Blocks:

Use building blocks and ask the child to build a tower with a certain number of blocks, for example 5. Then, ask them to add or subtract blocks to the tower, like 3 more or 3 less. Ask what are you left with?

Faith

On Friday, 14th of June at 9:30am, some Year 3 children will be celebrating the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. In class, the children have been preparing for this special time through reflection and prayer, focussing on healing and forgiveness. We pray for our Year 3 children during this special time.
