What's Been Happening in Year 6
On May 15th and 23rd, the Year 6 classes went on an excursion to the Mary Glowrey Museum in the city. During this excursion, we learnt many fascinating facts about Mary Glowrey’s life. We also learnt about what she did as a sister and doctor in India, and the incredible story of her life. Did you know that Mary Glowrey was the first female to become a nun and a doctor at the same time? She needed special permission from the Pope to do this! One of our guides at the museum was Mary Glowrey’s great-niece, who provided an amazing primary source of information to us. As we toured the museum, we admired numerous replica artefacts and photographs from Mary Glowrey’s life. We all had an amazing experience and learned lots of facts about Mary Glowrey!
Year 6s also went to St Patrick's Cathedral. On the outside of the building, there were lots of turrets, and carvings on the wall. When we got inside, we went on a scavenger hunt before Mass was in session. During the scavenger hunt, we explored different altars and chapels, describing what we saw. It was truly magical with how beautiful it was, the atmosphere being amazing. We were assigned to answer questions about the Cathedral, one of which required us to count all the visible pillars. While we searched for the answer, we discovered there are 52 visible pillars inside. Did you know that St Patrick's Cathedral was one of the two largest churches completed to a significant extent in the 19th century? It was really interesting to learn all about the Cathedral and that we even got to see the priest preparing for mass! While we were there, we also admired the massive organ, which has 4,762 pipes and a set of Spanish trumpets. We all had lots of fun, and we learnt a lot inside of the cathedral and we were extremely grateful for this opportunity!
Overall, we had a lot of fun and learned a lot of interesting information that will help us prepare for receiving our Sacrament of Confirmation.
