WAVERLEY DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY

The Vermont Secondary College Cross Country team competed at Norton’s Park in Wantirna for the annual Division Cross Country Championships. It was a fantastic day weather wise with plenty of blue skies and sunshine despite the cooler temperature.

We were lighter on than usual with our competitor numbers due to illness, injury and state bowls clashing with the event, but despite all of these factors the team did the best they could on the day.

Vermont finished 2nd place overall, with Mount Waverley emerging victorious. Our senior runners were able to retain the senior shield courtesy of high participation levels from our year 11 and 12 students. A fantastic result.

51 students have qualified for the EMR Championships to be held at Yarra Glen Racecourse on Thursday the 13th of June. Students are encouraged to engage in their own training sessions outside of school and to keep an eye out for Compass announcements regarding training opportunities during lunchtimes at school.

SSV STATE BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The SSV State Bowls Finals were held on Tuesday the 7th of May at Club Sunbury and VSC proudly had our Junior and Senior teams competing. All students committed many hours of their time to train and prepare for this day and it was well worth it!

The competition began with a round robin format and this included 3 sectional games. Unfortunately for the Senior Team of Max S, Austin L, Lucas H & Kai T, the day did not start the way they were hoping with a narrow loss to eventual State Champions from FCJ Benalla. After the nerves settled and our students got used to the speed of the bowling green, two extremely gallant efforts left us finishing the sectional play in 3rd place.

Unfortunately, this well drilled team did not make the finals, however they will be back bigger and better next year in their final opportunity as Year 12 students. For the Junior team consisting of Year 8 students Jake H, Archie C & Fletcher D, a formidable win in their first sectional game resulted in a huge confidence boost moving into the remaining matches.

Although losing their 2nd sectional game didn’t help their cause, team skip Jake H held his nerve in the final sectional game and played an absolute clutch bowl to win the game and progress to the semi-finals.

The semi-finals proved to be a huge step above as our Junior Bowlers ended up losing to Kyabram in a one-sided affair. However, with Archie and Fletcher making the State Finals for their first time and being totally new to the sport, it was an incredible effort to finish 4th in the State.

Thank you Mr Leithhead for helping coach the junior team on the day and providing much needed motivation at critical points throughout the day. Finally, to all students who have represented the VSC Bowls Team in 2024, Mr Coles could not be prouder of your efforts and motivation to continue improving and dedicating your time to this great sport!

SSV STATE BASEBALL FINALS - INTERMEDIATE BOYS

The Intermediate Boys Baseball Team made it all the way to the State Finals and competed against Richmond High, Maribyrnong Sports Academy & Frankston High School on Wednesday 22nd of May.

The team had trained hard leading up to the event and had retained talent from the previous year’s competition.

Game one was a combined effort of pitching, hitting and defensive gems that saw VSC win 9-0 against Richmond.

Game two was the biggest challenge of the day against last year’s state winners, Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Harrison G pitched without fear and struck many batters out but the team was unable to overcome some early runs scored by the opposition to win game two. Despite the loss, both sides were treated to a hidden ball trick out at first base by Jack C! The play drew a congratulations from the opposing coach and a laugh from the umpire.

The final game of the day saw Frankston beat VSC but not before Jack C completed another hidden ball trick to record an out! Drawing cheers from the umpire again.

Mr Coles and Mr Malpeli would like to thank all the boys for their effort and contribution to what was a great day out at state baseball.

INTERMEDIATE ROUND ROBIN

Boys/Mixed Soccer

On Thursday 16th May, the intermediate boys soccer team competed in the division round robin. The team put in a fantastic effort against some tough competition. Unfortunately, the day did not go in our favour, however, the team should be proud of their work and look towards giving it another go next year. The first game ended in a loss, followed by two draws. Some honourable mentions go to Christiano M for his high- class work ethic and defensive prowess and Ryan S for his athletic ability, numerous goals and team spirit. Overall, the VSC team gave it their all and should walk away proud of their accomplishments.

Boys Australian Football

On Thursday 16th of May the Intermediate Boys Football Team played at Wellington Reserve on a rarely perfect Melbourne day weather wise! The sun was shining, not a breath of wind. We had the first game of the round robin off. We played our first two games back-to-back, taking the 4 points for each and setting us up for a thrilling final game to get through to the next round. We had to have a break, however, before our last game, and unfortunately this caused injury to wreak havoc through the team. After tremendous efforts from all players in our first two games, fatigue had set in and some bodies became cold and seized up during our game off. The boys put their bodies on the line and gave it their all in the final game, however we were not able to get up in the end and got knocked out of moving forward to the next round. Still, everyone had a great day out representing VSC and all should be very proud of their efforts throughout the day.

Badminton

It was a challenging, yet extremely enjoyable day for the VSC Intermediate Badminton Team. After a series of trials and training sessions, this hard work showed on the court! With some stellar performances in the preliminary round, both Boys and Girls A Teams were competitive throughout the whole day, finishing in 3rd place. It was a terrific team effort from all players in the B teams and this proved to be an important factor with several doubles wins on the day.

Unfortunately VSC’s badminton leader and Coach Josh Chia could not attend on the day, but the students look forward to working alongside Josh for many years to come!
