New Semester Eve Thursday 6th June
Reset
The end of this week marks the end of Semester One and the opportunity for a fresh start for students and staff. Semester Two begins on Tuesday, June 11. For core subjects like Religion, Math, Science and English, by and large, students remain with the same teacher and in the same class however it is worth noting that the trade-off of being able to offer students different and exciting electives in Semester Two means that some teachers may change. As parents and carers, we should be aware of this possible change and the fact that some slight adjustment may be required for your young person as they navigate the change. Thankfully they have three weeks to help adjust to the changes before the holidays.
One of the exciting things about the change of semester is the opportunity for students to reflect upon their performance and commitment in the first semester and to reset for the second half of the year with positive behaviours that will help them maximise their potential and achieve their learning goals. At home this long weekend we suggest you sit down with your young person to spend some quality time talking through their first semester and committing to the following prompts.
- What will I keep doing?
- What will I stop doing
- What will I start doing
- What support do I need from home to help make Semester 2 even better than Semester 1?
New Semester Eve activities
For Years 7 to 11 Thursday 6th of June was our New Semester Eve with some alternative activities happening for the students in Years 7, 8, 9, and 11.
- Year 12 students continued with their normal year 12 classes
- Year 10 students are presently finishing off their work experience
PROJECT ROCKIT - Year 7 & Year 8
‘RALLY’ delivered by Project Rockit is a program designed for High School students.
RALLY is designed to empower students to create a culture that challenges bullying, online and in person. Students learned about ways to take action against bullying and unite together, instead of standing by.
The big idea: “Every single one of us can choose to be part of the solution when it comes to tackling bullying, even in the smallest and simplest ways.”
ROCKS Matrix activity Year 7 & 8
- Working in small teams within core groups, students have developed their core group matrix of what they would like our school-wide expectations (The ROCKS of Resect, Organisation, Collaboration, Kindness & Safety) to look like in their language within the classroom, the yard, online and when communicating with others - ie. the behaviours they should see with each of the ROCKS.
This has been an opportunity for them to take ownership of the behaviours that our school-wide expectations should inspire and to create a matrix for each core group to help them refresh, as they embark upon the fresh start of a new semester.
Year 8 Respectful Relationships and Digital Brand Workshop
- Researched, written and delivered by our Pastoral Care and House leaders, in conjunction with the College Counselling team, this session focused on helping the students understand some of the traps of social media. The focus was on Respect and the foreboding message that each social media post and each ‘like’ is building our digital brand - a brand that follows us through life. Implicit in this teaching is the message that typing or posting without thinking has more potential to harm than heal, so we need to be careful with which groups we choose to join, who we follow, what images we post and what we ‘like’ online. A message that will be developed later in the year when we have the Cybersafety project come in to speak with students.
Year 7 Class Challenge
- A set of challenges and puzzles designed to have the students work together in small teams to develop their teamwork and skills of collaboration.
Within the task is a jigsaw on the College uniform as a different vehicle to remind them of the uniform expectations that we know we have your support to enact.
Year 11 Fit To Drive
- An interactive program featuring discussions, activities, and videos developed by the Fit2Drive Foundation. The purpose was to educate our Year 11’s on road rules relevant to the graduated licensing system and to equip them with strategies to stay safe as a road user.
Students were guided by trained university students as well as Victoria Police and members of Fire Rescue Victoria.
Student benefits:
- Practice exactly what they would do and say in risky road situations
- Be given the opportunity to reflect on how to stay safe and ways to get home
- Gain an understanding of issues on the roads and road safety directly from Victoria Police and MFB officers
- Learn skills to look out for themselves and each other
- Be able to take positive action
Whole New World - Safey Partying presentation - Year 11
- This workshop was delivered by Sonya Karras the founder of the Whole New World Safe Partying Program. Sonya works with a range of organisations including; The Victorian Police, The Education Department (presenting to more than 200 schools across Victoria), Youth Groups, the Local Council and Child Welfare to name a few.
Sonya provided students with information and strategies to keep themselves safe and make smart decisions whilst partying. The session was filled with anecdotes and real-life experiences that students can easily identify with.
I hope that the extra long weekend for students helps them to do a hard reset of their application and behaviour so that they will continue to strive to be the best version of themself.
