Red Class News

Miss Graham

It’s hard to believe that Term 1 is nearly over! K/1 students have been gradually settling into school routines and becoming more confident in their learning.

Literacy

Kindergarten has recently started learning their first letters and sounds, an exciting step that allows them to begin reading words. Their enthusiasm for learning is evident as they eagerly participate in activities. They have also been exploring verbs in sentences and are slowly grasping this concept.

Year 1 has finished revising their Kindergarten sounds and is now learning new spelling patterns. They have also been working on understanding different types of words, including nouns, verbs, and adverbs.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, K/1 has been focusing on numbers. They have been practising counting objects one by one, recognising numbers, and writing numerals correctly. They have explored position, which introduced them to Bee-Bots, and have also begun sorting 2D shapes based on different features.

Students have recently completed a unit on measurement, where they compared and ordered lengths using informal units such as blocks and counters. They enjoyed exploring different ways to measure objects around the classroom and discussing which items were longer, shorter, or the same length. Additionally, they learnt about halves and quarters.

Other Activities

K/1 recently attended The Very Hungry Caterpillar excursion, where they enjoyed watching multiple stories brought to life on stage. The students were captivated by the performances!

In preparation for ANZAC Day, students made ANZAC biscuits, sparking conversations about the significance of the day. This hands-on experience also tied into their Science learning, where they explored how materials change. As they mixed ingredients, they made predictions about what would happen, such as how butter would melt in the microwave and how flour and sugar didn’t change until warm butter was added.

In sport, students have been developing their fundamental movement skills, focusing on coordination, balance, and control. They have also been learning about teamwork, turn-taking, and playing fairly, helping them build essential social and cooperative skills.

The class has also been working on Easter-themed artwork, using a variety of materials and techniques. They are excited to take their masterpieces home once completed. Additionally, they have had creative free time with craft materials, and their imaginative ideas have been truly impressive!

It has been wonderful to see the students’ love for learning grow each day, along with the friendships they are building in the classroom. We are proud of their efforts this term and look forward to more exciting learning in Term 2!
