Year 7 Science
This term, Year 7 students have been diving into the fascinating world of separating mixtures as part of their science unit. With a focus on sieving and filtering, students have been hands-on in the classroom, learning how to separate solids from liquids and different-sized particles from one another using real-life techniques.
From muddy water to mixed-up sand and gravel, students used filters and sieves to clean, sort, and explore the properties of materials.
These practical activities not only reinforce scientific understanding but also help students appreciate how these techniques are used in everyday life, from making clean drinking water to preparing ingredients in the kitchen.
Well done to Year 7 for their enthusiasm and teamwork. Keep up the great work, scientists!
Year 8 AG Tech
Our Year 8 Agricultural Technology students have swapped their notebooks for garden gloves as they embark on a hands-on journey of designing, growing, and nurturing their very own school gardens. This project has given students a unique opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a practical setting while learning valuable lessons about sustainability, planning, and patience.
With only two terms to complete the project, students had to carefully consider the environmental conditions, space restrictions, and time constraints when selecting plants. Each group took on the challenge with enthusiasm, researching the best plant varieties to suit the season and our local conditions.
The garden beds are now thriving with a colourful and delicious mix of crops, including crisp lettuce, crunchy carrots, vibrant snow peas, fragrant herbs, and cheerful flowers such as zinnias and cosmos. Students are taking great care in tending their plots—watering, weeding, and observing their plants daily with growing anticipation.
As the gardens continue to flourish, students are beginning to see the results of their hard work. They’re learning that growing food isn’t just about planting seeds—it’s about commitment, observation, teamwork, and resilience. Soon they will quite literally harvest the fruits (and vegetables) of their labour, gaining a sense of accomplishment and a greater appreciation for where their food comes from.
This garden project has not only fostered agricultural knowledge but also built confidence, responsibility, and a deep connection to the land. Well done to all our budding gardeners!
Year 9 - Australian Food and Fibre Excursion
On the 1st May, our Year 9 HSIE and Stage 5 Ag students went on an excursion to an Australian Food and Fibre (AFF) farm to learn about cotton farming. Students learnt about AFF's irrigation systems, how cotton pickers are maintained, AFF's sustainability strategies and what products are made from cotton. Students watched cotton pickers being prepared to go into the field, including being blown down, greased, and the doffers checked. We then got to see the cotton pickers in action in the field. Thank you to Ed Seccombe and Jake Stringer for presenting to our students and giving us some merchandise to take home; it was very generous!
