Year 8 Page to Stage Elective: Performance of the Lorax

The Year 8 Page to Stage Drama elective class showcased their impressive radio play at the Bendigo Sustainability Festival on Sunday 30 March. It was a proud moment for the students and for Girton Grammar as they confidently presented their work to a large audience at the Garden of the Future in White Hills. The performance highlighted not only their talent but also their ability to collaborate as a team, managing a production schedule, planning and using digital tools like Teams to bring their vision to life.

A standout addition to the performance was a poem written by Layla Turton, which captured the rhythmic style of Dr Seuss. Her poem reflected on the history of tree felling and its environmental impact, complementing the themes of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, the play they adapted. The students even created a radio ad to sell 'Schneeds', adding a fun and creative touch to the performance.

Parents who attended expressed their enjoyment and appreciation for the opportunity the students had to share their talents. Congratulations to all involved.

Girton Community Action Group News

Term 1 has been a very busy one for the Girton Community Action Group! Under the guidance of our Co-Curricular Captain, Eva Westbrook, the GCAG team has fundraised, celebrated Harmony Week and planned for some really exciting events for next term.

At the start of the year, we celebrated the amazing efforts of our fundraisers from the 2024 Colour Run, raising more than $4000 for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Congratulations to all students who participated in the fundraising activity and we hope that you enjoy your prizes!

In February, we kicked off with the Swimming Carnival BBQ, cooking more than 700 sausages and making a healthy donation of nearly $1000 to Righteous Pups here in Bendigo. Righteous Pups Australia Inc. trains dogs for assistance  and therapy roles which empower people to live with greater independence, social inclusion and quality of life.

March kicked off with our annual Dignity Drive, collecting period products to support people who menstruate and are experiencing hardship. It also marked a month-long celebration of diversity in Bendigo, culminating in Harmony Day celebrations on 21 March.

On 6 March, our Captain Eva Westbrook and members Aaliyah Greenwell and Amelia Westbrook, accompanied by Mrs Naughton, attended the opening ceremony of the City of Greater Bendigo's Cultural Diversity Month. This event was hosted by cultural ambassadors from our region and was opened with a smoking ceremony conducted by a Dja Dja Wurrung Elder. There was plenty to celebrate, with multicultural food, dance, music and a panel discussion on 'Multicultural Women in Business' to mark International Women’s Day on Saturday 8 March. It was a colourful display of all that makes Bendigo a great place to live and learn. Ex-Girton student Liya Roy was one of the performers at the event, dazzling us all with her Bollywood style dance.

Harmony Week at Girton began with a school assembly lead by the GCAG students. Madame Ryan delivered a stirring speech on how multiculturalism has impacted on her past, present and future. This was followed by dance performances from Ashmi Dissanayake (9 Jones), Aditi Kumar (9 Jones) and Aarya Sapehiyia (9 Riley).

On Friday 21 March, GCAG organised Harmony Day activities, including cupcake decorating and craft activities, raising over $300 to donate to Sister Works. Sister Works offers employment and entrepreneurship support for migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women. The organisation offers practical vocational and small business programs and connections with employers.

Thank you to the Girton community for generously supporting our efforts in Term 1, and we look forward to continuing to support our broader community next term.

One Act Play Festival

Girton Grammar’s annual One Act Play Festival took to the stage Thursday 20 March.

This series of student-led performances is entirely written and directed by the students, with everything from lighting and props to set design and costumes crafted by them.

This year, the festival’s adjudicator was local photographer and theatre performer, Daniel Soncin. In addition to judging the evening’s performances and providing invaluable feedback, Daniel also presented awards for the Best Junior and Senior Writer, Director, Actor, and the Best Overall Performance. For the first time, the Judges' Special Award for Best Comedy was introduced.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the evening and extend our congratulations to all those who participated!
