World's Greatest Shave

On the morning of Friday 21 March, the gates of Girton’s Junior School opened to a vibrant spectacle of colourful and crazy hairstyles, as students and staff gathered to support the World’s Greatest Shave.

For nearly two decades, Girton students have embraced this annual tradition, rallying together to raise vital funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. In the lead-up to the big day, students embraced their entrepreneurial side by selling icy poles and handmade bracelets to boost fundraising efforts.

The highlight of the event was the shave itself, where 12 courageous Year 6 students volunteered to shave their heads in solidarity with those affected by blood cancer. Their selfless act was met with an outpouring of support from the school and the wider community, with generous donations helping Girton exceed its 2025 fundraising goal of $20,000.

Adding to the poignancy of the event, students also shared a heartfelt address about their own family’s experience with cancer, reinforcing the deep impact of the disease within the community.

Deputy Head of Junior School, Mrs Viv Bath, who has coordinated the event since its inception at Girton, highlighted both the excitement and significance of the day for students.

“The World’s Greatest Shave is always a special time at Girton. While it is a fun and colourful event, it is also deeply moving to witness our students come together to make a difference realise the impact they can have,” she said.

“We are incredibly proud to have surpassed this year’s fundraising target, thanks to the outstanding efforts of our students and generosity of our community.”

Girton Grammar extends its gratitude to SM Hair Studio for donating their time and hairdressing expertise to support this event.

Meet the 12 students who bravely shaved their heads this year...

Xave Tweed

This is a really important cause for me because my Nan has just been diagnosed with blood cancer.  I would like to do this for her. Shaving my head is nothing compared to what people with cancer go through.

Steve Georgeos

I wanted to participate in the World's Greatest Shave because blood cancer is so common, and it doesn't feel right to not do anything about it. So many people get affected by it every year and I feel like it's the very least I can do.

James Dalton

I am doing this in honour of my Pa and my Aunty who both died from cancer.  I hope the money we raise stops others suffering.

Cancer affects so many people each year. I believe raising money will help with research and treatments. My grandparents have been affected by cancer and have received treatment. I know the money I raise will help other people.

Conor Elliot

Leukaemia and other blood cancers affect so many people. My family have seen friends and loved ones go through cancer and I know that every bit of support, no matter how big or small, helps. By joining the WGS I hope to raise money for important research and eventually a cure for cancer.

Otto Chapman

I would like to help raise money for the WGS. My pop is battling cancer and I hope this money helps him and others who are dealing with cancer.

Gilbert Pham

I would like to shave in the World's Greatest Shave because ever since I learnt what cancer was I felt very empathetic towards those who are suffering from it. I would like to participate in the shaving so I can help those who are suffering from cancer.

Hudson Martin

I would like to do the World’s Greatest Shave because I want to help support people with cancer. My Pa died from cancer and I will think about him when I am having my hair shaved.

Nate Douglas

I am incredibly passionate about supporting the Leukaemia Foundation and raising awareness for those affected by blood cancer. I am so proud to be a part of this meaningful event to help raise funds and make a difference to the lives of others.

Abe Chapman

I want to help those affected by cancer. I have been fortunate enough not to have any family members affected but I know of others who have and I hope the money I raise will support them.

When I think of cancer I feel sad. My Aunty Tash died from cancer in 2020. She was a student at Girton College in 1990 and was in Jenkin House like me. I want to help raise money so we can do more research and stop people dying from this horrible disease. I am also due for a haircut!

Charles Smith

I want to shave and show my support to people undergoing cancer treatment. Two years ago, my great aunt passed away from leukaemia and her daughter is also affected by cancer. I hope the money I raise will support people who are suffering.
