Sports News

Its been an amazing and busy few weeks in Sport with high level of success from students in our school.  We will include more photos and reports in the next newsletter when we return for Term 2.

Girls Touch Football

It was the girls Touch Football team’s turn who played in a gala day at Armidale as part of the NW knockout. Game 1:- The girls were up against Bundarra first.

The girls found their rhythm early after a good warm-up and drove the ball well. Whilst the win went to Glen Innes special mention has to go to the Bundarra girls who were valiant going down with a strong effort from their total of 6 players only.

Game 2, against Tenterfield was a fairly even match up for the first ten minutes until Glen Innes tidied up a few errors and unsurfaced a more reliable defensive system.

In the 2nd half the girls played strongly and found a lot of metres through the middle often getting to their line in 3 drives. With attacking plays on the line and effecting an efficient ‘draw and pass’ the girls managed 7 tries to Tenterfields 2.

A more intense game was had against a capable Armidale side. Various local footy identities from both Armidale and Glen showcased their talents in this game however ultimately Glen was better from Wing to Wing.

The Glen side marked Armidale’s talented players with strong defence and shut out many of their try scoring opportunities on the line. The final score of this game was 4~2.In the final game Glen faced a positive Uralla side .

Uralla displayed a very willing and consistent team and their strong on field effort unnerved our Glen girls seeing a tight game right up until the final whistle. A lucky win to Glen, 3-2! The entire GIHS team is to be congratulated on their efforts.

Each player contributed strongly in every game. They subbed well and their ‘box sets’ often resulted in good field position in their attacking half and on a few occasions tries were scored off these ‘plays’.

The Glen Innes side consisted of girls from year 7 right through to year 12 and yet, regardless of age or experience, every player held their own when on the field giving their best effort. Well done girls!

The Glen side now play Quirindi in the NW semi-final early next term. Absent from Photo Imogen Biddle.

Sienna McConnell 13th overall  in the 17+ 100m Breaststroke.

Well done girls!

CHS Boys Touch

The GIHS open boys touch team traveled to Inverell to play pool 1 of the North West Knock Out. Special thanks to the Inverell Council in providing a spectacular surface to play on and to Melissa Wilcocks from IHS for organising the event.

Game one - GIHS defeated Macintyre 9-0. The GIHS team came out to play in this first game and were on ‘fire’ with very few mistakes over the entire match . They played at a speed that Macintyre found difficult to defend. They controlled the ball well and the metres were continually made and the tries kept coming.

The Macintyre team played with plenty of spirit and skill however the GIHS boys shut them completely out of the game. Game 2… GIHS defeated Bundarra in a friendly match. At half time Glen blended some of their players into the Bundarra squad to assist the development of Bundarra's younger players.

The final game was against Inverell High. Inverell came out strong and momentarily unsettled a casual opening by our Glen team with the score locked at 1 all for most of the first half. With a late rally in the half Glen scored another quick two tries to go into half time leading 3-1.

Glen found further rhythm in the second half and took on this half with more precision and pace, extending the score to win 6-2. All GIHS players offered excellence most of the time, however special mention to pod 3, Will, Leo, Pat and Kylan who defended well and often converted attacking chances into points.

Further mention to Emory who skillfully executed two beautifully timed intercepts leading to runaway tries. The team now progress to play the winner of pool 2 which is decided on Thursday.

Girls Soccer

The GIHS 15’s girls soccer team travelled to Inverell meeting Holy Trinity Inverell in the first round of Bill Turner Trophy competition. The girls rallied well in a great defensive and attacking team effort coming away victorious in a 5-1 win.

Paige Floyd was the goal scoring machine getting all 5 goals with some great assistance and perfectly timed passes from her team mates up front. Jas Fuller must be commended on her leadership and brick wall defence that certainly shut down the efforts of Holy Trinity. Great work by all the girls in the team.

Next round will take on either Guyra or Tenterfield in round 2 early next term.

Girls Rugby Union

Jasmine Klingner, Beth Arandale and Ilyssa Newbury travelled to Tamworth on the 31st of March to attend North West Girls 7s Rugby Union trials.

There was a large turn out and the group showed a high level of skill. The quality of players is improving year after year, which is excellent to see in the girls game.

Beth was selected in the 12 person squad and Ilyssa was selected as the 1st reserve.

 Congratulations girls!
