Engagement, Wellbeing and Inclusion

Wellbeing Team

As we reach the end of a busy and exciting term, the Wellbeing Team at Bemin Secondary College would like to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful start to the year. We have had the pleasure of welcoming both new and returning students and have been actively engaging in a range of activities to support their wellbeing. Our Wellbeing team have had over 90 student referred to the team for individual supports this term.

A highlight this term was welcoming Sona Sibi, our new counsellor and youth worker, to the team. Sona has already made a positive impact, connecting with students and providing valuable support. We are delighted to have her on board and look forward to the expertise and care she brings to our school community.

Term 1 has been filled with fun and engagement, including our much-loved Staff vs. Students games. These events have provided a fantastic opportunity for students and teachers to connect in a relaxed and enjoyable setting, promoting teamwork, resilience, and school spirit.

In addition to these activities, our team has been busy running sessions to get to know our students better, ensuring they feel supported and valued. Whether through one-on-one meetings, group sessions, or lunchtime check-ins, we have been working hard to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone. The team has met with over 90 student this term following up on individual student needs.

As always, we encourage families to reach out if they have any concerns or would like to refer their child for additional wellbeing support. The Wellbeing Team is here to help, and we can be contacted via the Wellbeing Inbox (8396-wbreferrals@schools.vic.edu.au)  for any questions or referrals.

In 2025 our College has officially joined the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) initiative, a Department of Education program aimed at fostering a positive school culture. SWPBS focuses on setting clear expectations for behaviour, reinforcing positive actions, and creating a supportive learning environment for all students. Our Term 1 data reflects the overall positive start staff and students have had this year, and we look forward to further embedding SWPBS principles into our school community.

Another fantastic initiative running again this year is our Breakfast Club, proudly supported by Food Bank. This program ensures that all students have access to a nutritious breakfast, helping them start their day ready to learn. Breakfast Club has been a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with peers and staff while enjoying a healthy meal. We encourage all students to drop by and take advantage of this great program. The sessions run 4 days a week, two at each campus.

Inclusion Team Update

Our Inclusion Team has also been working tirelessly this term to ensure that all students receive the support they need to thrive. Our dedicated Education Support Team has undergone some changes to best match student needs, ensuring that every student receives the care and assistance necessary for their learning journey. Additionally, we have hired new staff members to further support our growing student community, allowing us to provide even more targeted and effective assistance.

On Thursday we say goodbye to one of our founding Educational Support staff members Darren Cutting. Darren has been a key member of the team, support students on our senior campus. His calm and positive energy will be greatly missed by staff and students and we thank him for his hard work over the last 18 months.

A special thank you to Julija and Siobhan for their incredible work this term in leading Student Support Group (SSG) meetings and their efforts in developing and refining Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Their dedication to student success has been invaluable, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to ensuring every student is supported in reaching their full potential.

The school was also lucky to have some visits from a Visiting Teacher (Elizabeth Pitruzzello) to present about supporting one of our students who has low vision. - The roll of the Visiting Teacher Service is to provide expert support and consultation to school to engage and include students with additional needs.

Thank You to the Transitions Team

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Transitions Team for their incredible support in welcoming our new students this year. With a high number of new enrolments, the team has worked tirelessly to ensure each student feels comfortable, supported, and ready to succeed at Bemin Secondary College. Their efforts in supporting families through the enrolment process, student orientation, peer support, and individual check-ins have made a significant impact, helping our newest students settle into the school community with confidence. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication in making this transition a smooth and positive experience for all.

The Wellbeing, Engagement and Inclusion team look forward to continuing our work next term and supporting our wonderful students and families. Wishing everyone a restful and rejuvenating break!
