From the Classroom

News from The Seniors

It’s hard to believe Term 1 is almost over, but our senior students have been fully engaged in their learning right until the end!

In Maths, students have been exploring data and probability. They created their own survey questions and gathered responses from their senior classmates before analysing the results using mean, median, mode, and range. They have also been discussing probability using words, fractions, percentages, and decimals.

In English, students are nearing the end of Wonder, which has been a hit! They have enjoyed following Auggie’s journey with his family and friends. To finish our unit, we will be watching the movie on Friday and comparing its similarities and differences to the novel.

Over the past few weeks, students have been working on their second inquiry project—creating an All About Me PowerPoint to share their interests, strengths, and goals for the year. These will be presented on Thursday and Friday, and we look forward to learning more about each other to strengthen our classroom community.

We hope everyone has a happy and safe two-week break and look forward to another exciting and busy term ahead!

Middle School News

This week in Literacy we finished our novel study on Fantastic Mr Fox and watched the movie after lunch during the week. We have also completed our work on Narratives for the term. Students in the Middle unit have been focused on story structure, complications, instead of said words, speech marks and expanding sentences.

In Numeracy, we have been identifying and investigating  2D and 3D shapes. Students planned and constructed 3D creatures and had to include three different types of 3D shapes as well as including some 2D shapes. Students have really enjoyed this project and it has been great to see their plans come to fruition!

We hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing break and we can't wait to keep working with your children in Term 2!

Juniors Tell All

Healthy eating in Inquiry.

This week in inquiry our Foundation to year 2 students have been exploring the importance of healthy eating. As part of their learning they participated in a fun and colourful ' Rainbow Food' tasting activity. They tried a variety of foods that were the colours of the rainbow. Even if they were unsure at first, all students showed great curiosity and courage by giving everything a go. Some even discovered that they liked a new food! This was such a fun and engaging activity to embrace healthy eating as a cohort!

Literacy -

Junior B has been working on writing their own narratives, creating characters and story ideas to share with the class. Junior A has been enjoying a fun writing activity based on We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, but instead, they are going on a principal hunt around the school. The students have been developing their storytelling skills and using their imaginations to bring their ideas to life through drawing.

Mathematics-

This week, students have started learning about place value, focusing on tens and ones. They have been using blocks and bundling sticks to help them understand how numbers are made and grouped. These hands-on activities are helping to build their confidence with numbers and counting.

Indonesian

It is great to see the enthusiasm shown by our students as they learn not only the language but also learn about the culture of Indonesia. It has been a busy term, particularly for our new Preps as they settle into new routines at school.

Heathmont College Indonesian Cultural Day – Tuesday 25/3

Last week, our Grade 5/6 students went to Heathmont College to participate in an Indonesian Cultural Day with two other local primary schools.

The activities included batik drawing, Indonesian dance, games and martial arts. The activities were run by the Heathmont College students. Another highlight of the day was nasi goreng (fried rice) for lunch which was “enak!” (delicious!)

We are very fortunate to have a great relationship with Bu Devathas and Heathmont College which enables a smooth transition for our students heading into Year 7. It was great to see some of our former students running the activities at Heathmont College.

Sayembara Lisan Competition 2025

Next term we will be participating in Sayembara Lisan, a state-wide Indonesian Speaking Competition. This is run by Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association (VILTA), and the finals will be held at University of Melbourne on Saturday 14th of June. The first round will be held at school at the end of May and Bu Devathas, from Heathmont College, will visit to judge our students as part of the Eastern region. The competition includes simple questions and the students will either sing a song, recite a poem or respond to a prompt in Indonesian. We will be covering the material in class and there is no cost involved. Interested students will have the opportunity to be part of a lunchtime club to practise for the competition.

We have been very successful over the past few years with a number of our students making it to the State Finals.

I wish all of our students "Semoga sukses!"

If students have access to the internet at home, they might like to explore or revise their vocabulary at the Indonesian section of Languages Online at: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/indonesian/indonesian.htm
