LEARNING TO LEARN

Level 6 students have been settling beautifully into new routines and expectations as we start the year. We’ve been focusing on building a strong sense of community in the classroom, and students have loved getting to know their new classmates and teachers through a variety of fun activities. It’s been wonderful to see friendships forming and confidence growing as we set ourselves up for a great year ahead.

LITERACY

Reading Identity, Engagement, and Writing Baselines

Mentor Text: Boy Overboard

Term 1 prioritises reading confidence, engagement, and identity formation as students enter their final year of primary school. The focus is on establishing positive reading habits, building discussion norms, and reducing anxiety around reading and writing tasks.

Students engage with narrative structure, character motivation, and ethical decision-making through a highly accessible and engaging text. Writing instruction emphasises baseline data collection across key genres, narrative voice, and stamina, providing a clear starting point for growth across the year.

MATHS

To kick off our Maths learning this year, Level 6 students shared information about themselves through maths by creating personal posters for their classmates.

This week they also investigated growing shape patterns using triangles and pentagons, identifying how patterns change and grow, extending them, and creating their own designs while representing their thinking through drawings and tables.

Over the next two weeks, students will continue developing their algebraic thinking by exploring patterns, rules and relationships in numbers and shapes. They will practise explaining their thinking and using mathematical language to describe how patterns grow and change.

COOKING

Students in 6A and 6B enjoyed their first cooking session for the year, making a delicious noodle salad. They proudly showed off their cutting skills in the kitchen and embraced the opportunity to try something new. It was wonderful to see their confidence growing as they worked together and tasted the results of their efforts! 6C are counting down the days until it’s their turn in the kitchen next week.
