Kitchen Garden

Our garden is officially in its happy place. With long sunny days and warm nights, our summer vegetables are growing, thriving and showing off in the best way. Everywhere you look, there is something new unfurling, ripening or climbing just a little higher than yesterday.

The tromboncino zucchinis have been especially impressive, stretching and twisting their way across the garden beds with their signature long, elegant shapes. Nearby, cucumbers are popping up daily, crisp and bright, while our tomatoes will soon begin to turn from green to red, promising juicy harvests ahead. The eggplants are right behind them, with deep purple fruits and lush leaves soaking up the sun.

The pumpkins have spread out and have officially taken over the corn patch. Currently, there are 6 pumpkins growing. The anticipation of how big they will get is building. Over the holidays we harvested about 10 corns; peeling back each ear was a wonder of surprise and excitement, almost like opening Christmas gifts and wondering how good it is going to be.

We also have a new bird bath as a permanent fixture in our Kitchen Garden. The Nasiakos family won the silent auction gardening prize. Together, we built the bird bath, collected eggs, gathered and harvested herbs and vegetables, and delicately collected lettuce seeds and coriander seeds, which will soon be re-planted into our garden beds.

It is a joy to watch this season’s produce unfold. These thriving vegetables are the result of healthy soil, consistent care and a little Chatham magic. We are looking forward to harvesting in the weeks ahead and sharing the flavours of the season as our garden continues to flourish.
