Foundation News

This fortnight, and up until the end of Term 3, in English we are learning to spell through the short sounding diagraph ea and the digraphs th and or. We continue working towards achieving our writing goals, previous and new, through recounts and short narratives based on our experiences. In guided reading we increase our skills each week through small group work where our teacher concentrates on our individual reading needs. The Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes this Friday. Please help your child to achieve the challenge by reading Challenge Books to your child each morning or evening (see the list on the PRC website) and uploading the books read, to your child’s challenge website page. A BIG thank you to the parents who are able to come in each morning to listen to the children read.

In Mathematics, the students are learning to add and subtract items and numbers in different ways; through problem solving, questions, investigations, using tens frames and writing equations.

In science, this term and next, we are inquiring about living things and their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, and where they best live and grow. Make sure you have logged onto Compass to give permission for your child to attend the excursion on Monday 16th September to the Cranbourne Gardens.

In Respectful Relationships we are learning how to read people’s feelings, put ourselves in someone else’s shoes to see how they feel, and responding with kindness. We look forward to seeing you at Ormond PS’s family and friends open afternoon this Friday, 6th September, 2:00 to 3:15pm. Here we will demonstrate some of the activities that help us to be aware of our own and other people’s feelings. Start in your child’s classroom and then rotate with the grade to the next session.

Have a lovely fortnight and we look forward to seeing you this Friday!

Year 3 News

On Thursday 15th August, the Year Three’s along with, Mrs. Stewart, Mr. Cap, Miss. Bainbridge, Miss. Delaney, Miss. Cecil, Mr. Brown and Mrs. McLeod went on their very first school camp at the Briar’s Adventure Camp in Mount Martha. We went there to take a break from school and to have some fun.

When we boarded the bus we were all very excited, especially the boys who could not stop talking about it. When we arrived it was about 11am. As we looked into the crooked forest, the camp leaders Bella, Austin and Ryan introduced themselves. They explained the camp rules to us and took us on a tour around the Briars. We discovered that the activities were the Flying Fox, Hut Building, Crate Stacking, Giant Swing, Bush Cooking and Low Ropes. Our favourite was the Giant Swing because we fell down at high speed on an enormous swing.

After a day of activities we found out who we would be sharing a cabin with. Everyone was really excited about this. It was now night time and time to eat dinner. We had chicken schnitzel with some delicious vegetables. Feeling full with a side of deliciousness, we grabbed our pillows and sleeping bags to watch Paddington 2.

In the morning some of the students went for a run around the camp with Miss. Bainbridge and Miss. Delaney. It was very early. For breakfast we had toast and cereal. After packing our cabins, we did our final two activities. We then got to watch Mr. Cap and Miss. Delaney have a go on the Giant Swing. They looked very dizzy after it. Before finishing up at the Briar’s, we had some yummy hot dogs for lunch.

Feeling quite full, we board the bus home. On the way back, everybody was feeling very exhausted.

It was the highlight of Year Three and we can’t wait for next year’s school camp.

MUMA Excursion

What perfect weather was had for 5A and 5C to attend the Visual Arts excursion to MUMA on Tuesday!

Students attended a guided tour of the Monash University Museum of Art as well as the Monash Art, Design and Architecture Studios where they were able to interact with some of the Art and Design students that were busy working on their pieces. Students also attended an artist talk with Nick Jones, before participating in a hands-on book sculpting workshop.

Their wonderful pieces will be on display in the library.  Over the next 2 weeks the remaining Year 5 & 6 students will also be attending this excursion and I can’t wait to see the wonderful creations they bring back.

"We went to Monash University yesterday and it was terrific! We visited Nick Jones and he taught us how to do paper art. We also saw amazing art which also had some deep meaning. It was fabulous."  Sarvesh

"The MUMA excursion was probably the best excursion we have had all year. We did fun activities including walking around the campus seeing 3D printers in action and making a pop-up book.  The art gallery showed different types of art. The art was in black and white and some in colour."  Luca

"I liked our excursion a lot because I got to learn a lot of new things like folding books with artist Nicholas Jones. We explored the Monash Art Museum and there was a lot of contemporary art."  Bella

"At MUMA I got to fold books into cool designs. It was really fun and we got to see cool art pieces. A man named Norman took us through a room with 2D and 3D printers. My highlight was folding the books. I learnt about different designs of paintings and the style they can be presented in." Alex

"Personally, I loved this experience and hope to go again in the future. It was educational and helped me improve my art skills for my future to come. We saw one of the students’ projects which was actually pretty interesting and learned about laser cutters and all the cool creations they made."  Annaliese

"We looked at Contemporary Art. I learnt that each piece has its own deeper meaning. Nicholas Jones taught me how to make something different with paper folding. It was fun!"  Raph

"On the excursion I learnt how to do book folding and I had a nice tour around the campus.  I liked how we had a tour and now I want to go to University."  Sarah D

"We learnt how to feel the music and textures of art in silence. We also learnt how to fold pages in books to make a masterpiece made out of trees! We experienced some of the most famous artworks in MUMA and shared our ideas with Melissa, the class and our teachers. I enjoyed this excursion and I hope we do it some day next year!"  Max

"We went to the Monash University Museum of Art. Our host, Melissa, showed us contemporary art and I learnt that no art is good or bad.  After we got a tour around the university by a man by Norman and later we were taught how to make a pop-up book by Nicholas Jones." Brooklyn
