Principal's Report

From the Principal...

What a busy term we have had full of productivity, engagement and learning success. Term 3 always provides rich learning experiences with many incursions, excursions and elaborations on the learning from Semester One.  The students continue to display our core school values and they appreciate the opportunity to spot fellow students to receive global citizenship awards at whole school assemblies. In 2019, the children and wider community have embraced student voice and agency with leaders attending school council meetings on a regular basis. Students have also been developing lunch time clubs and activities based on their areas of interest and they continue to provide feedback to staff and leadership about whole school improvement.

Facilities and Grounds

Yesterday the leadership team, Victorian School Building Authority & 1:1 Architects met with our construction team to have a walk-through of the site and to lock in time lines for our capital works project. It finally feels like we are about to commence works after such a rigorous planning and development process. The meeting commenced at 9:30 am and we were delighted to have Nick Staikos and his associate join us to celebrate this milestone.

We are also set to install our new outdoor furniture which looks amazing and already has the children excited and enthused. The benches, chess tables and seating will be placed outdoors based on a map carefully constructed by our facilities school council subcommittee. Much thanks to them for their sourcing of quotes and selection of products which will help to beautify our wonderful school environment.

Father’s Day Stall

We had our Father’s Day Breakfast on Tuesday morning and the turnout was terrific! The team who organised this event deserved lots of praise and gratitude as every adult I spoke to was so appreciative. From pancakes to great coffee – everyone had a fabulous start to their day! The weather was also kind which made for outdoor fun between fathers, guardians and/or carers and their children.

NAPLAN

The school received our 2019 results for NAPLAN this week and we have sent these home to families with students in Year 3 and 5. Ormond PS has much to celebrate in relation to these results and comparisons with like schools. I would like to thank the staff and students for their commitment to this week of testing and for their hard work and efforts. NAPLAN forms one part of our overall assessment schedule and we continue to use a variety of assessment results and evidence to determine how well our students are tracking.

Staffing News

I am pleased to announce that Rae Galvin will continue on in the role of Year 3 classroom teacher till the end of the year. This provides stability for those students and an experienced teacher who is highly valued by the school community. Currently, I am working with the staff and the school leadership team to commence planning for 2020. The school may operate with 18 classes next year which provides greater flexibility for decanting students during building works. Our enrolment figures will still be over 415 and the school intends to create straight grades at each level. The staff have had opportunities to express interest for certain levels and to determine any changes in their work situations. Openings for contracted positions will be placed on recruitment online in a timely manner so we can secure our 2020 staffing profile as soon as possible.

Sunsmart Policy and Bike Education

From September 1st, all students must come to school with a hat to play outdoors. This is part of our Sunsmart policy and we urge families to be vigilant in checking all students are attending with this item. If students are also participating in Bike Education programs, we encourage them to be Sunsmart but to also abide by our safe riding policies after school or before. This includes walking the bike or scooter out of the gate and being careful on and around our roads. With many more bikes coming to Ormond PS – we are seeing more examples of unsafe practices close to traffic and pedestrians. Please take care!
