MESSAGE FROM OUR RIA DIRECTOR

I have been Assistant Principal for the second half of 2018 and it has been a great experience. Some highlights would include our international and local students participating in the Rotary Getting Started with Public Speaking course. The students did an amazing job of presenting to a group of teachers, parents and friends. The continuing high level performances of our students in RIA is a source of pride for the College and the community and this was no more evident than in the number of students we had participating in the State Schools Spectacular. I love being a part of a school that allows so many young people to pursue their passions and take on challenges.

MESSAGE FROM OUR GENERAL EXCELLENCE DIRECTOR

It has been a great year in GE with many outstanding events and achievements. My thanks to all students, staff and parents for their support and determination to make General Excellence one of the four wonderful programs within our great school.

There have been many highlights including:

Teach the Teacher session where student leaders used PIVOT data to plan and deliver a professional learning session for all teaching staff with a focus on authentic relationships. One of the key messages related to Warmth, Empathy and Time.

Many community based projects including raising money for worthy causes such as Movember, World Challenge in Nepal, Poppy Appeal, Food Bank Food Drive Daffodil Day and helping at Fair Share cooking food for those in need and giving out stationary and colouring books at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Spotlighting Issues including mental health & wellbeing with RUOK day and musical performances at local shopping centres and retirement villages, which all helped to strengthen our connections to the broader community. Year 9 & 10 GE students undertook inquiry projects which saw them exploring greater Melbourne and delving into the question of ‘What makes Melbourne great?’

As you can see it has been another busy year with much to be proud of. Thank you to everyone for the part they have played in making RSC such a great school. I look forward to an exciting 2019 with even more successes!

Jordan dances at the Street Dance Studios in Mitcham. When asked what he sees for his future he said:

“I definitely see myself as an entertainer in the performance industry working for Disney, Warner Bros, Universal Studios, Fox Studios etc. Right now I am also studying Business Management. Currently, I take every opportunity I can to perform and luckily I get lots of gigs through my dance studio and other means. I have a side business called “Hero Passion” where I perform as Spiderman for birthday parties and other events. Business Management has helped me get a good perspective on this. For the future I am looking at studying further dance as well as studying a Diploma in Theatre Arts for the production of shows.”

Jordan added: “Rowville SC has helped me get to where I want to be...... I was one of only 2 applicants that were taken at the year 9 level last year. So many teachers to thank especially Ms. Saraya Lubarsky (Glee Club) and Mr Figliuzzi  (Mr Fig) my amazing dance teacher.”

Well done Jordan, on behalf of everyone at the college, we wish you every success in your future dance career. You can follow Jordan on Instagram: @Jordan.performer

7M PARTNERS WITH REPTILE ENCOUNTERS TO CREATE SHARK ENCLOSURE

Written by Mr. Dan Sherlock.

On Friday November 23rd, our 7MSA cohort began their final major project of the year with the help of our friends at Reptile Encounters Australia – to create a submission for an upgraded enclosure for the three Port Jackson Sharks (PJ, Mindy and Zorro).

The students made their way out to Reptile Encounters HQ in Burwood and undertook a series of investigations to determine the requirements for the new enclosure including: water testing, the dimensions, volume and quantities of materials such as glass, water and filters, trying to recreate the natural habitat of Port Phillip Bay with other organisms, plants and enrichment materials that will engage and stimulate the sharks.

The students are currently hard at work to develop a whole-class proposal that, with a $2000 budget, will detail every aspect of the sourcing, construction and establishment of this new facility in housing the Port Jackson Sharks for many years to come. To say we have been excited in the build-up to this event is a major understatement and the students have been absolutely exceptional in their efforts so far to ensure we submit a high-quality and well-researched final proposal. The proposal will be submitted for consideration by Josh Cox, the Director and Founder of Reptile Encounters, and his team, for it to be commissioned over the upcoming Christmas break.

In February next year, the class will make their way back to Reptile Encounters HQ for the grand unveiling of the new enclosure. All footage and documentation of the student’s efforts will hopefully be part of a showcase next year at the Port Phillip Sustainability School Festival.

These are very exciting times in the MSA program! Stay tuned for further updates.

Student Reflections

"The purpose of attending the excursion was so that we could begin planning to build a new Port Jackson Shark enclosure. The reason being is because the sharks are at their juvenile stage and are beginning to outgrow their current enclosure. During the excursion I filled the role of a photographer, there was other roles such as videographers, water testers, measuring teams and tank life surveyors. The result of our project is to design and build the sharks a new enclosure and potentially present our work at the 2019 sustainability festival. There will also be an official opening of the enclosure during February 2019."

Jarrod, Year 7 Student.

"These three sharks are continuing to grow and they need a new tank. On the day my role was a videographer, I was filming the water testing team perform different tests on the water from the shark’s current tank; the videos taken on the day will then be put together and made into a movie that will potentially be presented at the 2019 sustainability festival. "

Kellee, Year 7 Student.

Check out these amazing photos from the World Challenge in Nepal. 11 students from Rowville Secondary College have traveled, trekked and helped rebuild the Hillside Academy in Chitwan Province and supported the local Nepali communities. Well done to our students and teachers - what a life changing experience for you all.

YEAR 7 ORIENTATION DAY

Year 7 Orientation Day was a great success. Many new friendships formed as students participated in ‘getting to know you activities’,  mini lessons and circuit sports. Highlights from the students included: making new best friends, the sausage sizzle and icy poles at lunchtime, doing a flip on the mini trampoline, drama and finding their way around the school. Here's what our helpers had to say:

"On Orientation Day I was one of the helpers with 7S and I got to meet a great bunch of new Year 7's. We started the day in our Learning Mentor session and did a getting to know you activity. After recess, we went along to the Mini lessons and the grade 6's had a taste of Art, English and Maths. This was really good as the students had a tour of the school along the way to each mini lesson. After the BBQ lunch, we had a lot of fun playing activities such as dodgeball and Jacob's ladder. It was great to see students getting together, working as a team and watching new friendships develop."  Blake Eggert 8T.

"Orientation Day began with the 2019 Year 7's and their families being welcomed in the PAC. Then the grade 6 students found out who their Learning Mentor was going to be. We then went to the Learning Mentor session where we helped out with some getting to know you activities. After recess, 7V had the following mini lessons: English, Humanities and Science. At lunchtime, we enjoyed a sausage sizzle and an icy pole with the grade 6's. We then found our group and participated in some fun sporting activities to end the day. We really enjoyed being helpers on Orientation Day!"  Candice Kilderry  & Elena Kaye-Aguirre 8T.

BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS

Rowville Secondary College has now become the most successful school in Australia at The Australian Basketball School Championships which took place in Melbourne recently. We have won 14 titles, all at the elite level, since our first in 2012.

RESULTS

Our girls program made a complete sweep, winning Gold in the Women’s U20 Open Championship Division, U17 Division One and U15 Division One.  Our Men’s U20 Open Championship Division team won the Bronze medal, while the U17 and U15 Division One Boys narrowly missed berths in the medal play-off games.  According to the Day 5 Basketball Australia wrap, these results made Rowville Secondary College the leading basketball school in Australia in 2018. Well done to all of our students and coaches. For the full story visit Basketball Australia.

CHRISTMAS SERENADES

Students in year 7 and 8 prepared Christmas themed songs and serenaded teachers and students during their lessons last Friday. Some students took the opportunity to thank staff for their efforts this year and wished them a happy holiday season and new year.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS MUSIC TOUR

We visted Heany Park, Karoo, Rowville, Kent Park, Lysterfield and Park Ridge Primary School. "The young children all loved the performances singing and dancing. It was a great representation of our school's talent and the students all did a fantastic job,"  said Mr Damien Mizzi, Music Director.

WALTON @EAST CELEBRATES HOUSE PROJECT
