Foundation Year

It is hard to believe that this week is Week 9 in Term 4. The weeks are certainly going by very quickly!

Over the last couple of weeks, the Foundation students have been learning about how to write a letter. The first letter we all wrote was to our parents and they arrived in the mail boxes last week. On Thursday, the students wrote a letter to Father Christmas. These very special letters were posted on Saturday to the North Pole. Hopefully, a letter from Father Christmas will soon arrive to everyone’s home address by Christmas Eve.

In Mathematics, the students have been introduced to “Making Groups”, during the coming week our focus will be on making our own groups and identifying how many are in each group.

In Religion, we are currently learning about the Advent Wreath and soon we will be exploring the story of the Nativity.

Looking forward to the final weeks of the school year and working together to further develop our collaborating and communication skills.

Have a great week everyone!

Year 1/2

This week the students have begun learning about Advent.  They have been brainstorming and learning about the significance of Advent.

In Inquiry, the students have been taking care of their gardens and pots and learning how living things are affected by the condition of the environment.

In Literacy, the students have been comparing and contrasting and finding the main idea in texts.

In writing, they have been revising how to write procedural texts.  They certainly love writing about how to make disgusting foods!

In Numeracy, the students are learning probability and describing the outcome of familiar events using the everyday language of chance.

Year 3/4

Last week 3/4BF led our school prayer service lighting the first Advent candle representing HOPE. We looked at the ways in which we can have Hope in our lives and bring Hope to others using Caritas as our guide. This week our school prayer will be led by 3/4KD.  They will light the second Advent candle representing PEACE. Through the program of Caritas Australia we will investigate how we can bring Peace to others in our lives and our community.

We are focusing on revision of place value and algebra in Mathematics.

We continue to write information reports of non-fiction in our writing and we will revise comprehension strategies when reading for meaning.

Congratulations to Alana Kraljevski (3/4BF), Samara Di Bartolo (3/4KD) and Daniel Gaffney (3/4GT)  as our students of the week for Week 8.

Year 5/6

Last week in the SLA the students participated in our 2 camp ‘Fun Days’. The theme of these days was “Back in Time”. The 5/6 teachers organised a range of activities, some of which the students had done when they were younger.

We began our fun days on Monday with a team-building activity, where the students created a group name and team philosophy. Each team was then given some materials to build the tallest tower out of spaghetti. The students created some incredible towers and demonstrated their incredible engineering skills. Each tower needed to stand on its own for 3 minutes and needed to include a marshmallow at the top. The tallest recorded tower for the day was 102cm! The teams then played a few rounds of golden child and dodgeball to earn points for their teams.

After recess, and a delicious donut, we had a paper aeroplane competition! The 5/6 students created some high flying paper planes to compete against one another, aiming for the longest throw. The winning plane flew from one end of the hall to the other! Our final activity for the day was a fantastic General Knowledge Trivia round, run by our two school captains.

On Tuesday the students began the day preparing for a talent show. They created dances and practiced their singing and magic tricks to perform for their peers. It was incredible to witness all the talent we have in the SLA!

After this, the students competed in a scavenger hunt out in the yards, where they had to decode the riddle and find its matching picture. This was great fun, and all the students worked so well with their team to solve the problems.

Next up on the schedule was the “Potato Olympics”, this was an activity the students did when they were in Year 1/2 and they were very enthusiastic. Each child decorated their own potato using pipe cleaners and glitter glue and then it was time to compete! The potatoes were then taken outside to compete in a range of activities for their team. The events included a best dressed, tunnel ball, potato and spoon race, ten pin bowling and a bucket toss.

To finish off our camp days, the students participated in a talent show. All of the performances were incredible and the teachers were blown away by what the students could do.

The 5/6 teachers would like to thank all of the year 5/6 students for their enthusiasm and teamwork over our fun days and congratulate them all for their participation in each event.
