Education in Faith

Faith in the Future

On Friday morning the 5 February, our whole school gathered to give thanks as we assembled as one family. We pray that in this new year we can be beacons of hope, peace and light. In 2021 we celebrate to 200th anniversary of Catholic Education. May we build on the foundation of those who have helped shape our Catholic school communities in Australia. We placed our decorated pebble on the ground to mark our place and commitment to make a difference this year.

We carry the flame of the Spirit

We will live, love, reach out to the world

Bringing joy, hope and peace in God's name.

Gospel

Mark 1 : 29 - 39

In this week’s Gospel, we learn that Simon had a mother-in-law. We become aware that when Simon left everything behind to follow Jesus, that “everything” included family. Jesus the Healer cured Simon’s mother-in-law and many in the town who were sick. Jesus teaches us by example that it is important to take time to be alone to pray. From prayer we can draw strength to do what each day requires, most especially by showing our family in word and by deed, what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and a child of God.

Jesus modelled for us a life of prayer. To foster prayer in the home, choose a small table or a space where you can create a prayer area. Cover your table with a cloth in the colour of the liturgical season, and place upon it a Bible, a candle, and a crucifix or cross. With your family, decide on when you will gather to pray together around your prayer table or in your prayer space. Asking God to bless our times of prayer so that we can know and follow God’s ways.

Bringing the Gospel to our Family

Amidst the business of our daily lives, gather as a family and talk about the ways in which your family prays together (at Mass, grace before meals, bedtime prayers). Invite each member of the family to talk about his or her private prayer:

When do you pray?

Where do you pray?

How do you pray?

What do you pray for?

Discussion Starters

What do you think Jesus was praying about in today’s Gospel?

What guidance have you received from God in prayer?

Someone I know who is in need of healing is . . .

My favourite place to pray is . . .

My favourite way to pray is . . .

Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
