Y9/10 Be A Vet

This term, our Year 9 & 10 'Be A Vet' students have been busy learning about genetics and inheritance, as well as animal anatomy and physiology. As part of this, they have been exploring in the lab.

Firstly, they extracted DNA from strawberries, collecting long spools of DNA after adding extraction chemicals. Strawberries work well because each cell contains 8 copies of DNA, so there is a lot to collect!

Then, they completed a rat dissection where they practiced their use or forceps and scalpels to investigate the internal organs of the rat. Being mammals, rats have a similar structure and organs to humans. In particular, we looked at the digestive system, including the liver, stomach, small and large intestines. They could also see the heart and lungs!
