Grade 4-6

Busy times for everyone!

Swimming, graduation preparation, school leader applications, assessments...the list goes on! We have been proud of all of the students for their positive attitude to work, with noticeable improvements in all areas of the curriculum as a cohort. Well done, estudiantes!

Learning in Mathematics

We have been continuing to consolidate our knowledge of division strategies, applying this to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Division seems to be the basic operation that most students seem to fear the most! However, practicing different strategies has allowed many to gain more confidence when solving sums. In the Spanish classroom, students have been working on statistics and probability with a lot of chance activities.

In Spanish Maths, our 456 students have been working on Statistics and Probability. We conducted chance experiments, assessed the likelihood of a variety of events occurring, discussed the difference between dependent and independent events, and explored a range of ways of expressing probability (fractions, decimals, and percentage). We also looked at different types of graphs and assessed their suitability depending on the data being represented. All of these whilst engaging with a mix of hands-on activities, book work and class discussion.

Learning in Literacy

In reading,  the 456 students have continued developing their text understandings via their discussions in Literature Circles, and through the lens of the various Literature Circles roles students have begun participating in 'Close Reading' collectives. Close Reading is a comprehension strategy whereby students, with the support of the classroom teacher, extract meaning from texts by examining carefully how language is used in the passage itself.  In writing, students have switched genres and are now focusing on creating narratives, and whilst doing so emphasis is being placed on developing the students revising and editing skills through the use of our 'Detective Toolkit'.

In Spanish Literacy, students engaged in a variety of spoken and written learning experiences to continue developing their communicative skills. This term our focus is on narratives. We have been discussing the structure of narrative texts as well as exploring and experimenting with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and cónjunctions to expand our linguistic resources. Students have been reading narrative texts and starting to write their own narratives.

¡Buen trabajo!

As we are nearing closer to the end of the year (eek!), this week has been filled with assessments in all areas of Mathematics and Literacy. Coupled with swimming, there have been some very tired students at the end of the day- a big pat on the back to all for all of the hard work this week!
