2023 Notebook Program

Students in Years 1 - 5, 2022

Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) is used to engage students in a unique

way, providing opportunities for students to design and create things of their imagination. It engages students in real world problem solving that requires them to collaborate and lean on each other’s strengths.

Students are exposed to the digital world in a safe and controlled environment, learning how to be the best digital citizen they can be.

Newlands 1:1 program started in 2012 and has undergone many changes during this

period. A main change has been the transition from iPads to Notebooks, giving students

greater access to learning experiences and highlights the device as a tool for learning rather than entertainment.

The Victorian Curriculum integrates ICT from Foundation onwards. At Newlands Primary

School, we are fortunate to have a unique multi-grade structure that allows us to engage

students from Year 2 to Year 6 in our 1:1 program and shared bank of devices in the Foundation and Year 1 levels.

A 1:1 program provides students further opportunities to collaborate through technology, develop safe digital practices, further providing creative learning opportunities and tailored learning experiences for all students.

ICT provides learning resources beyond the capabilities of analogue tools, not to replace,

but to extend what is currently available to our students. At Newlands Primary School we

implement the SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) model to

ensure that we implement technology in the most effective way possible.

Substitution: Technology is directly substituted for a more traditional teaching tool or

method.

Augmentation: The technology is directly substituted for a traditional tool or method, but

with significant enhancements to the student experience.

Modification: Instead of replacement or enhancement, this is an actual change to the

lesson’s design and its learning outcomes.

Redefinition:  Tools that allow educators to redefine a traditional learning task in a way that would not be possible without the tech.

We continuously strive towards digital technology at Newlands Primary School to be implemented at the Redefinition stage. As of 2022, Newlands Primary School provides a STEAM Specialist lessons to all students, embracing technology, providing valuable learning experiences for our students.
