From the classroom

News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

In Reading, students are continuing to read and enjoy Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordon. We have been completing tasks using graphic organisers as well as answering comprehension questions and analysing the text.

In Writing, students have been looking at speeches by inspirational people and are beginning to write their own speech for leadership and graduation. Students will also complete and present their passion projects over the next few weeks.

In Numeracy, this fortnight, students will be learning about transformations and enlargements. They will identify the effects of transformations by manually flipping (reflecting), sliding (translating) and turning (rotating) two-dimensional shapes. When enlargements are applied to two dimensional shapes, students will calculate and compare the areas and perimeters.

On Tuesday, 22 November, the year 5’s will be presenting their leadership speeches  to the 4’s, 5’s and 6’s as well as some members of staff. We have sent a letter home with expectations and ideas. We wish all the applicants good luck!

Harold and Life Ed will be visiting us in week 8, which is very exciting! Please go to Compass to give permission and pay.

Kind regards,

Pippa and Sheena.

What’s Happening in 3/4 unit

This week in math we held our last Market day with students working collaboratively to set up a shop, keep track of their till by writing receipts totaling items purchased, and counting out the correct change. The most successful shop was JB Hi TVs and Laptops, making a handsome profit. Each student had their own wallet of money and was required to make purchases of different values and reconcile their receipts after each market day, so they could calculate how much they had spent and if that tallied with the money left in their wallet. It was a lot of fun, as seen in the photos below.

This week we begin measurement, with the focus on mass, capacity and volume over the fortnight and lots of hands on activities.

In English the students have begun revising and editing their play scripts, trying to make them more entertaining for an audience. They are then going to publish them on the computer, so that they look quite professional and we can make multiple copies when needed for their performances.

The puppets are nearly complete and now the focus is on writing a procedural text with all the materials, tools and equipment that was used in the puppet construction, and step by step instructions on how they made them.

In Performing Arts on Tuesday we introduced the Carols that we will perform on the whole school carols night. We are warming up the singing voices and thinking about choreography.

Camp is coming quickly and hopefully we get some good weather. Please remember students need a paper bag morning tea and lunch for the first day as well as a drink bottle. They take this in a back pack. We will stop at Yea on the way for a break and to eat our morning tea.

Thanks,

The 34 team.

The Adventures of the 1/2

Hello 1/2 families,

In the ELC building we are tracking along wonderfully through the middle of the term! The students have been working hard on their long /a/ words over the last couple of weeks, and next week we will be beginning our unit on ew, oo, ue and u_e words for 2 weeks. If you can help your students identify words in their books at home, this would be fantastic!

In literacy we have begun a new unit of Persuasive reading and writing. Students have been learning the difference between facts and opinions and how to support our opinions with reasons/evidence. We will be covering this for many weeks to come, so feel free to have conversations at home about how your children can support their arguments to make them more convincing.

In math's we have finished up our unit on time and have moved into some revision on Place value and number lines. As a cohort we are working on breaking down the steps of a number line, using a ruler to mark points on the line and learning about open number lines.

Science has been so interesting the last couple of weeks! We have been discussing how objects/products can change when they are heated up. Spaghetti has been cooked and broken and molded into the pictures and this week we were building towers with uncooked spaghetti and jelly beans, which proved to be quite a difficult task! The 1/2's discovered that warming up the jelly beans in their hands was the most effective way to stop the spaghetti from breaking. Check out these pictures of all the work we did in science!

On Thursday for Remembrance Day we looked at visualizing using the poem In Flanders Field. Students discussed and drew what they were imagining from the words and descriptive language used in the poem.

We hope you have a wonderful couple of weeks!

Amelie, Helen and Hua!

Fantastic Foundation

We have certainly been very busy in Foundation this term and it's so pleasing to see the students thriving in their literacy and maths every week. This fortnight we are reading "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson and building our writing from these characters. We will be learning the final sounds of our phonics program - ow, oi, air & er - and then revising to ensure all sounds and letter patterns learned throughout the year are strong and clearly understood. In maths, we will continue exploring subtraction and then do lots of hands-on learning to explore sharing equally.

Next week, Harold and the Life Ed team will be visiting which is always very exciting! Please go to Compass to give permission and pay.

Also please remember the students need to be bringing their take-home packets and hats to school every day.

Best wishes,

Melissa
