GSSC Careers Team

Welcome, everyone, to the Greater Shepparton Secondary College Careers team. While we are new as a school we are really fortunate to have such an experienced and qualified team of Career Practitioners. We have a terrific website, www.gssccareers.com and a Facebook page (Greater Shepparton Secondary College Careers) that will promote activities, training and positions available for current and ex-students.

McGuire campus  - Lynda Bruce and Ant Newham

Mooroopna campus - Ruth O’Bree and Mary-ann Linehan. Mary-ann is the College Partnerships leader. This is a new position that emphasises how important we feel it is to build on our excellent links with partner organisations, employers, industry and other training organisations.

Wanganui campus – Tarsh Boyko and Graeme Crosbie. Graeme is the Careers Leader across the College.

MY CAREER INSIGHTS – A Great Year 9 Opportunity

As part of our College’s Career Pathways program, all Year 9 students will be participating in a two-part personal career discovery program called My Career Insights.

My Career Insights is designed to help students discover, develop and drive their career planning. It is a unique opportunity for them to learn more about their strengths and abilities, while exploring potential career options. This will give them the confidence to start taking control of their future.

Part 1: Discover - Students begin with the Morrisby profiling tool. The online discovery tool is a quiz designed to help students learn more about themselves, their values, preferences and skills that will give them a better understanding of where their strengths lie. These personal insights help open up a variety of possible career pathways, specifically tailored to who they are.  This will commence on Monday 2nd March 2020. Students will have an allocated session time.

Part 2: Develop - My Career Insights gives students an opportunity to talk one-on-one with an independent career counsellor about any initial ideas and thoughts. This discussion will help them to set realistic goals, and commence decision making to continue their career journey.

Meetings will commence on Thursday 17th April 2020 and continue through Term 2. This meeting will be scheduled for 30mins. Meetings will be conducted between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Students will be notified of their date and time. If you would like to be present at the meeting please contact the Mooroopna Campus administration office to book a time slot.  This will need to be done by Friday 6th March 2020.

All activities related to this program will be conducted at Mooroopna Campus.  Further information regarding this program can be obtained from Ruth O'Bree.

Parents/guardians are asked to complete and sign the permission form, students have been given, and return it to the Administration Office by no later than 24th February 2020.

CI CARD TRAINING

The Construction Induction card is the base level qualification needed by students wanting work placement in construction trades (e.g. plumbing, electrical, building). Many Yr 10’s and 11’s (possibly Yr 12’s) will be wanting to do placements with these trades. Unless you’ve done this training you won’t be able to.  Therefore, GSSC is running a CI Card training day at the Wanganui Campus for any interested students.

Unfortunately, we only have twenty available places and these will be filled on receipt of applications and payments. Application forms are available in your student Compass News feed. Then return these at the same time as the $100 payment required to be paid at your main office. Places will be filled only with complete and paid applications. Students from all campuses will be participating. Training is being held at the Wanganui Campus. Students from other campuses will need to catch school buses to and from Wanganui Campus for this training day.

GV HEALTH WORK PLACEMENTS

The only way to access placements at GV Health this year is by applying through the school. Placements are available not just in Nursing and Allied Health but in other areas like Administration, Engineering and Maintenance as well as services like Catering. To see what is available collect an application form and opportunities handout from the Campus Careers staff. The first week of placements is 16-20th March. To apply for these particular spots students will have needed to submit their application to their Campus Careers person already. This was advertised via Compass News Feed daily. The College has been very fortunate to have been allocated four weeks across the whole year, nearly 50% of the allocation available to all schools!

CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY VISIT

Year 11 & 12’s at both McGuire and Wanganui campuses were visited by staff and students from CSU this week. They found out about what it’s like to go to Uni, the courses, their campuses in a presentation and then had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with staff to look at their own aspirations and pathways.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers are so important to our community that it simply wouldn’t function properly without them. We rely on them in:

  • emergency organisations (CFA, Search and Rescue, SES, St Johns Ambulance)
  • sporting groups/teams
  • community groups (like Word and Mouth,  Ethnic Council, CWA, youth groups etc)
  • and charity organisations (Zaidees Foundation, Red Cross, Salvo’s etc.)

Volunteering builds new skills, helps you practise skills you already have, helps you meet and mix with people you wouldn’t otherwise, builds your support network, helps you develop your career and shows others all your positive attributes.

We’ve been promoting two particular opportunities to students over the past week.

Mad Cow Run - Saturday 29th Feb – Zaidees Foundation, which promotes organ and tissue donation, has one major fundraiser each year and it is this event. They require volunteers to supervise stations, orientate participants through the course, register participants, deliver water around to volunteers. This is a full day, starting before 6:30 am and finishing late afternoon. Students can try out the course after the last participants move through. To get involved go to The Connection before 6:30 am on Saturday 29th February 2020.

Family Care – Another opportunity is a weekly commitment, for one night a week. Family Care runs after school programs for small groups of young people. They need older buddies to pair up with a young person each week and participate in the various activities

It is important that volunteers are present consistently, the young people rely on the relationship they build with their buddy. If you are interested then go in to Family Care (they are in Welsford Street), introduce yourself and find out more about becoming a volunteer.

PARENTS – School to Work Resources

Supporting your child in preparing for the world of work after school can be a challenge. Casualisation and globalisation of work force, automation and rapid advances in technology will all have an impact in your child’s navigation of the world of work.

The Australian Government has developed resources to support parents through their new Future Ready Career Education Portal. To access the resour
