SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH COMPETITION
On Monday 28 October, four students from McKinnon Secondary College went to La Trobe University to receive their bursary awards from the 2019 Science Talent Search. The Science Talent Search is a competition that is organised by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria and has been running since 1951. Thousands of students from around Victoria enter each year. The Search has many different categories, such as experimental research, computer programming, and creative writing. The theme of this year’s competition was 'Destination Moon: more missions, more science', to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
The guest speaker at my award ceremony was chemistry teacher and author James Kennedy. He spoke about chemophobia, which is the fear of chemicals and synthetic products. He cleared up some of the misconceptions around the use of some chemicals, and also the importance of understanding the difference between the risks and hazards of different chemicals.
I would like to thank Ms Scott for giving us the opportunity to participate in this great competition and I encourage any interested students to enter next year. The theme for the 2020 competition is ‘Deep Blue’, so start thinking about your ocean science now!
