Library News

Last week we celebrated Book Week. This year’s theme was “Reading is My Secret Power.” This ensured that there was a lot of superhero themed activities in both the primary and senior libraries, as well as a focus on the CBCA Book of the Year nominees https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2019

In the Senior Library, there was the Morning Quiz where general knowledge and literary questions are given daily in the bulletin. This year we tested the boys’ knowledge of superheroes. Correct answers were then collected and one lucky class from each house was rewarded with a bag of chocolates to share. This is always highly competitive, and it was great to see how many home groups participated this year. A special shout out to both Mr Meus and Mr Gray’s homegroups who won the chocolates every day!

Next was the Treasure Hunt which was undertaken by middle school students. They were given seven clues and had to use their library knowledge to locate seven small bags of puzzle pieces in various locations in the library. They then had to put together all the puzzle pieces to claim their group’s treasure. The boys tackled this with much enthusiasm and some fantastic team work. We always enjoy seeing them dash around the library from vertical file to graphic novels, non-fiction to magazines. Special thanks to Ms Adderley and Mrs Haskey for organising the Treasure Hunt.

The annual guessing competition was another highlight of the week, with many students attempting to answer the super power themed questions. Winners of this competition will be announced soon.

In the Primary School, the boys in each class completed an activity based on one of the books shortlisted for the CBCA Awards this year. Popular activities included making useless objects (The All New Must Have Orange 430), chalk drawings (Chalk Boy), and creating colourful and decorative pictures of polar bears (Rainbow Bear).

The Primary Book Week assembly was hosted by 5LW, and highlights included each class presenting examples of their activity, the PowerPoint photos of boys reading books (some great photos there!), and Father Loh reading Noni the Pony Rescues a Joey. Thanks to Mrs La Forgia and Mrs West for their organising and running the assembly.

Congratulations to the winners of the various competitions:

  • 5/6 V for the Door Competition
  • Tighe McGinty, Ty Kerslake and Jack Galkowski for the Poster Competition
  • Luca D’Orazio for the ‘Guessing the books the teachers are reading’ competition (Primary) and Stefan Zienkiewicz and Keyshon Dalton (Senior)

Have a look at the photos above and see the various activities the boys got up to over the course of the week.

Thank you to all the staff and students who got involved in Book Week.

The next focus is completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Mrs Haskey will shortly be completing all the necessary data-entry for that, so it is important that all forms are in by Monday 2 September.
