Road Awareness Program

The Road Awareness Program (RAP) is a powerful, hard-hitting road safety presentation that was delivered by firefighters to our Year 10 cohort on Wednesday 21 August. As a school we offer students experiences with RAP in Year 10, the Street Smart whole day excursion in Year 11 and SAPOL guest speakers in Year 12 to continually reinforce the message of road safety. There are also other programs such as the Royal Adelaide Hospital P.A.R.T.Y. program that we encourage our senior students to attend.

The RAP program, whilst designed for young people in Year 10 or 11, its broad appeal and effectiveness has seen it expand into workplaces, sporting clubs, correctional service facilities and community groups. The program gives an open and honest insight into the experience of firefighters working in road crash rescue; RAP actively engaged and empowered our students as road users through its core message: “You get to choose the risk; but you don’t get to choose the consequences.”

During the 100-minute presentation, students were given a confronting and realistic insight into road crash trauma including vision of real crashes and crash survivors. A real-life crash survivor, now living with permanent disability, shared his story as part of the presentation. This element of the presentation was the most emotional, but students were able to draw inspiration from the crash survivor’s resilience and strength.

It was also extremely pleasing to hear back from the presenters how engaged and respectful our Year 10 students were as an audience.
