Principal's Report

Remembrance Day
On Monday 11th November, Milgate PS held a minute silence to honour those that have served our country. The Year 2s presented at Assembly, where they read the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, sang ‘Spirit of the ANZACs’ and shared historical photos of men and women that have served, some of which included images of family members that have served. The students created poppies that had the names of ANZACs on them and they were handed to staff and parents to honour those who served.
As part of the inquiry ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’ the Year 3s have started to look at historical events, how they teach us about a country’s past and how they have led to change. They marked Remembrance Day with a minute silence by our memorial plaque and made poppies with messages of thanks to those who have served our country.
Cultural Understanding and Safety Training (CUST)
On Tuesday evening, the teachers took part in the first of two CUST training sessions. The purpose of the training is to increase understanding of Koorie culture, history and experience to ensure a strong foundation for culturally inclusive practices. Training also aligns with the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes, including the state wide priority for positive climate for learning. In this first session, staff gained an understanding of Aboriginal culture and society pre-colonisation, the impacts of colonisation as well as some of the impacts of post-colonisation. They also learnt about the local community demographics and resources, including local Aboriginal organisations and committees/groups, to better support engagement and more effectively support students and families. We are looking forward to our second session next week.

Foundation Excursion | Rayner's Orchard
As part of the inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’, the Foundation students have been looking at where food comes from. On Thursday 14th November, they visited Rayner’s Orchard in Woori Yallock, where they participated in a variety of farm activities. They picked and tasted fruit straight from the trees and took part in fruit bottling, where they peeled, sliced and bottled their own pears to take home. They then took a tractor ride around the farm. The whole day was a wonderful learning experience for our students.
Building works update
D Block Gallery - The works in D Block near the school library are progressing well and they are ahead of schedule. The space is currently being plastered and the aluminium doors went last week to close off the area. It is exciting to see the collaborative space come together and it will be a great addition to the school.
Inclusive Playground - The work on the Inclusive Playground will start this week, with temporary fencing going up on Friday. The builders are planning on removing the blue equipment this weekend and will then begin the works around the green equipment over the coming weeks, before installing the new equipment later in the year.
